Job Summary

The ATLAS Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a curious, unconventional, polymath tenure-track faculty member in creative technology and design to develop and lead an externally funded research group, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and engage in university professional service.
Home to nearly 20 tenured, tenure-track, and instructional faculty, and with affiliates across the university, ATLAS hosts 225 undergraduate majors, 70+ masters' students, and 24 PhDs. We cultivate a culture and community of invention working in a variety of domains, for example but certainly not limited to the design and implementation of:
  • Materials science and engineering
  • Complex engineered systems, including bio-inspired design
  • Robotics and human-robot interaction
  • Virtual, augmented, mixed reality systems
  • Data/information visualization
  • Computational materials, geometry and/or fabrication

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • A successful candidate will lead a research group and develop collaborative relationships in academia as well as industry and community.
  • Successful candidates will be expected to engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring; develop an externally funded research program in their technical area; contribute professional leadership and service to their unit, the college, and their professional community; and cultivate and contribute to the inclusive excellence of our academic community.
  • The typical distribution of work for this role is teaching, scholarly and creative work (research), leadership and service.


What You Should Know

  • The anticipated start date for this position is Fall 2024, but a later start date may be negotiated.
  • We expect to hire at the rank of Assistant Professor; however, experienced candidates may be considered for Associate or Full Professor
  • Appointments will be rostered in the ATLAS Institute with a tenure home in one of the departments or programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science.
  • The successful candidate should be prepared to obtain external sponsorship to support their research group and teach and work with students at all levels from diverse cultural and intellectual backgrounds.

What We Require

  • Applicants must have earned a research doctorate in a field appropriate to their tenure home department or program, or have their degree conferred before starting a tenure-track faculty appointment.
  • Candidates being considered for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank must meet University standards and unit criteria for tenure and promotion to the designated rank. These criteria generally include having an established and ongoing program of original research, a strong publication record, a demonstrated ability to obtain external funding, and a record of high-quality teaching and mentoring.
  • Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience with research and publishing.
