Position Summary:
Position Summary

The Student Success Specialist / Advisor position assists the Director of Advising and is responsible for providing enrollment and retention assistance to students attending North Seattle College. This position provides direct advising services to all students and specializes in the development and coordination of programming for students in specific career training programs and manages the 30-credit completion check process for the Advising office. This position will be expected to work occasionally in the evening as program needs demand.

Essential Functions

This position supports students with the development of their individualized educational, career, and life goals. They assist students with course selection and advise prospective, new, and current students concerning college admission requirements, assessment/placement options, and degree requirements for college transfer and career training programs. They assist with understanding the transfer process and assesses student progress toward degree or certificate requirements. They make appropriate referrals for students in need of academic or personal counseling. This position will regularly collaborate with faculty, staff, and the campus community on program mapping as related to Seattle Pathways as well as provide leadership for advising activities, services, programs, and resources to specifically support students in career training programs. In addition, this position will manage the 30-credit completion check process for the Advising office.

Required Education, Experience & Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in education, student development, psychology, human relations, or related field.
  • Two years' experience with student services in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines while being attentive to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience with working effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, such as racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic, and with diverse physical and learning disabilities.
  • Proven highly motivated, self-starter, flexible; ability to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent in education, student development, psychology, human relations, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with student database systems.
  • Knowledge of student development theories and practices.
  • Experience in a community college setting.
  • Previous experience supporting students in career training programs.
  • Previous experience managing retention-related programming.
