Job Summary
The School of Information at the University of Michigan is recruiting a postdoctoral research fellow to work on a NSF-funded project centered around using machine learning-based approaches toward combating abusive behavior in online communities. The work seeks to develop an understanding of abusive online behavior primarily via statistical machine learning techniques and experimental methods. The work also uses theories from social science and linguistics to inform its approaches. The hired candidate will work with Associate Professor Eric Gilbert at the School of Information at the University of Michigan. This position begins in Fall 2020; salary and benefits are competitive.

Responsibilities*
The postdoctoral fellow will:
  • Collect data related to abusive online behavior
  • Design, build, deploy, and analyze models constructed on those data
  • Design, deploy, and analyze interventions structured around those models
  • Lead preparation of publications related to these activities
  • Work in collaborative teams of students and faculty

Required Qualifications*
  • PhD awarded by anticipated start date (Fall 2020) in fields such as Information, Computer Science, Statistics, Sociology, or other related disciplines.
  • Outstanding skills in quantitative research
  • Strong publication record
  • Commitment to work collaboratively on research and writing
  • Excitement about working on difficult problems facing online communities

Desired Qualifications*
  • Experience with machine learning methods is an asset.
  • Experience with system building is an asset.

The ideal candidate will also be highly motivated, an excellent communicator, and have the ability to work independently, as well as in a team.

Additional Information
This position will begin in Fall 2020. This position is funded by a research award for one year (with possible extension), assuming satisfactory performance and conduct, and availability of work.

At the University of Michigan, the postdoctoral researcher will be part of a vibrant interdisciplinary research community at the School of Information and will have opportunities to work with researchers in various labs, including: the Center for Social Media Responsibility (CSMR), Computational Social Science, Social Media Research Lab (SMRL), MIDAS, and ESC.
