Position Summary:
The South Seattle College Intensive English Program(IEP) is seeking qualified, experienced and dynamic professionals to join our part-time faculty pool for teaching positions that become available during the 2018-19 academic year.

About the IEP:
The IEP is an intensive college-prep academic ESL program for international students on student visas. Students in the lower levels attend ESL classes for 20 hours per week x 10 weeks per quarter. Upper level College Bridge students take 10-15 hours of intermediate or advanced academic ESL classes along with 2-5 credits of college credit classes. Our students are from all over the world and generally range in age from 16 to 25 years old.

About the Candidate:
The successful candidate is able to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, possesses superior ESL instructional skills to meet the needs and expectations of international students seeking high quality academic English language preparation for college, has experience teaching ESL in a college or university setting, is proficient using technology in instruction, and demonstrates a strong commitment to the TESOL profession.

* Part-time faculty positions at Seattle Central Institute of English are quarterly-contracted positions contingent upon enrollment, student placements and available funding.


Candidates should be willing to teach in a variety of formats such as in-class, hybrid, online and varied class times including days, evenings, and weekends according to program needs.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by AFT-Seattle and is subject to union shop provisions.


Essential Functions:
  • Teach from one to three (1-3) 50-minute intensive English classes per day, five days per week, for ten weeks (per quarter), according to established SCIE course outlines and curriculum.
  • Provide course syllabi and information sheets for each class taught.
  • Generate lesson plans, learning assessments, mid-term progress and final grade reports, and other required documents within the guidelines of the SCIE program.
  • Review student work, provide feedback and return assignments in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance records; submit attendance reports when students miss too much class.
  • Conference as needed with individual students outside of class.
  • Work collaboratively with other SCIE faculty and International Programs advisors and staff.
  • Keep up-to-date with program and college communications and announcements.
  • Attend program graduation at end of quarter.
  • Assist with quarterly placement testing and/or placements (extra stipend).
  • Attend quarterly faculty meetings.
Classes take place at various times of the day between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm (with majority of classes meeting between 1-4 pm)

Required Education, Experience & Abilities:
MINIMUM REQUIRED TEACHING EXPERIENCE and ENGLISH PROFICIENCY:
  • At least six (6) months' recent experience teaching in an intensive English or academic English program for adult students at an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Experience teaching all levels of ESL from beginning to advanced, and all skill areas including reading, writing/composition, grammar, listening, speaking & pronunciation.
  • Experience teaching English abroad.
  • Experience with testing, assessment, and evaluation of student learning.
  • Experience with the use of computers and technology in teaching ESL.
  • Native speaker fluency in both spoken and written English.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
MINIMUM REQUIRED ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: All degrees listed below must have been granted by an approved accredited college or university. Candidates whose MA degrees are still "pending" as of September 1 will not be considered for fall quarter employment.

M.A., M.Ed., or M.A.T. in English as a Second Language (ESL), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), or Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
OR
Masters in Applied English Linguistics, Masters in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) or Second Language Teaching (SLT) with emphasis on and significant coursework in English language acquisition.
OR
Masters in Education, Masters in Adult Education and TESOL Certification
