Job Description:
The Manager of Photography serves as a key leader in Syracuse University's creative team. The Manager is responsible for implementing a creative strategy through use of dynamic photography to strengthen the University's brand and advance the university's priorities and goals. The Manager oversees day-to-day operations of the photography team in order to capture and deliver compelling images that bring the SU brand to life and share the University's story. Works collaboratively with the ED of Multimedia, creative and art directors to lead large scale shoots that are part of national campaigns and marketing efforts. Also ensures there are effective systems in place to gather and turn around images daily as part of the Division's content strategy. Stewards the brand through creative guidance. A solution-oriented leader, guides the team in how to plan for and execute dozens of shots each month. Serves as photography art manager and lead photographer on critical shoots. Identifies and works with pool of freelance photographers, as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Five (5) plus years of experience working in a high performing marketing operation.
  • Track-record of producing high-end imagery for use across the marketing and communications spectrum.
  • Portfolio showing variety of work including studio, set and candid imagery.
  • Two (2) plus years leading photography teams as part of a modern marketing operations in order to advance strategic marketing goals.


Job Specific Qualifications:
  • Understanding of marketing/brand stewardship best practices.
  • Track-record: working within brand guidelines, marketing trends and effect on photographic style. In-shot composition w/ lighting, both studio & natural light. Significant experience & technical understanding shooting, editing & approaches. Portfolio demonstrates multimedia excellence.
  • Excellence in post-production/photo-editing. Requires intermediate to advanced knowledge of photography related software, incl. asset management.
  • Outstanding written /verbal communication skills. Move with urgency.
  • Works collaboratively w/diverse groups from senior executive to administrative staff/volunteers.
  • Manage stressful situations, solution-oriented w/ positive attitude.
  • Ability to oversee/ execute multiple projects simultaneously while working effectively under the pressure of last-minute deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Is proactive/takes initiative. Willingness to work some nights and weekends.
  • Close visual acuity to perform tasks related to photography.
  • Frequently moves equipment to various sites for shoots/events; ability to lift, set up and break down equipment. Ability to lift 25-50 lbs. Able to be in position to shoot a variety of images. Photo/video shoots may require standing, sitting, and kneeling for 4-8 hours.


Responsibilities:
  • Serves as lead photographer and day-to-day leader of the photography team. Works in partnership with Executive Director of Multimedia, Creative Directors and Managers to bring creative vision to life through effective lighting, art direction and composition. Translates marketing concepts into compelling and effective imagery. Collaborates effectively with the Design team to move creative concepts to photographic production. Directs team members in effective ways to express conceptual design. Captures versatile imagery that is oriented toward use and is appropriate in a variety of media including digital. Follows photography brand style guidelines.



  • Partners with marketing and content teams to activate the content strategy by capturing, editing and delivering compelling imagery. Uses marketing and communications best practices to capture images that are oriented to galvanize target audiences. Attends events on campus and captures images for use in marketing and communications materials. Identifies and partners with vendors or freelancers as needed.

  • Establishes and ensures structures and systems are in place for the team to be nimble in capturing and turning images for daily use on digital channels as needed. Ensures projects are completed on time on and budget. May require night and weekend work.

  • Partners with Manager of Marketing Technology to manage and leverage modern technology solutions (Photo Shelter). Responsible for ensuring systems allow for appropriate digitizing, archiving and logging of multimedia content, so it is searchable and well maintained.

  • Other duties as assigned.
