Job Summary
Logistics, Transportation & Parking (LTP) is seeking enthusiastic individuals to support MCity's driverless shuttle service on the University of Michigan's North Campus.

This automated vehicle on campus is a critical research project that will help improve understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with this type of mobility service and how people interact with it.

The service will use two fully-automated, 15-passenger, all-electric shuttles manufactured by French firm NAVYA to transport students, faculty, and staff on an approximately two-mile route around North Campus Research Complex (NCRC) and may eventually connect to Lurie Engineering Center.

Responsibilities*
The position involves a combination of operator (to ensure safe operation of the driverless shuttle) and customer service. The safety conductor role will be structured with strict procedures for the shuttle's operation and will focus on creating a safe environment and enjoyable experience for riders.

Responsibilities will also include maintaining safe operation of vehicle, communicating with riders, charging and light cleaning of the shuttles, reporting of issues, working with the research team on service improvement ideas and additional tasks related to customer service.

Required Qualifications*
  • Interest in sustainable transportation and advanced transportation technologies.
  • High school diploma or GED with 0-2 years of experience.
  • A valid Michigan driver's license.

  • Ability to operate a computer and basic computing skills.

  • Ability to follow detailed procedures.

  • Demonstrate flexible and creative problem solving skills.

  • Must be able to pay attention to details of the trip and rider interactions.

  • Excellent communication skills and comfort communicating with riders (including students, staff and industry professionals).

  • Respectful and compassionate attitude.

  • Quickly responsive to communications such as text or email.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to work a minimum of 3 days per week and 15 hours per week.

  • Successful completion of Driverless Shuttle Safety Conductor training program (post-hire).

Desired Qualifications*
Looking for candidates that have a passion for technological advancements in the transportation industry. Those studying engineering, computer science, urban planning and the social sciences may be especially interested.
