Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Gift Shop Manager, the Gift Shop Clerk will primarily be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the shop which includes opening and closing registers, ringing sales, assisting customers, and keeping the Shop clean and well stocked. This person will help provide exemplary customer service by becoming familiar with the Shop inventory, Museum space (galleries, bathrooms, classrooms, etc.) and Museum Programs. They will also be tasked with additional duties as the Shop Manager sees fit. This may include taking and editing photographs of merchandise for the online store, writing merchandise descriptions, and assisting in the maintenance of the warehouse. They also function as representatives of the Museum to the public and help promote organization-wide initiatives such as membership sales and special exhibition promotions and events. Weekend availability is essential, as well as flexibility throughout the week.

PRINCIPAL POSITION REPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

1. Operate the Museum's POS system to process merchandise sales and Museum membership sales and discounts, as well as open and close the registers at the beginning and end of the day.

2. Provide excellent customer service by promoting the Museum's exhibitions, the shop's products and by being knowledgeable about the Museum's events, layout and protocols.

3. Securely handle cash, credit, and check payment transactions.

4. Assist in the maintenance of the shop by making sure the store is clean, arranging merchandise on the shelves and restocking when needed.

5. Assist the manager and colleagues with other tasks such as producing signage, arranging merchandise, reporting and reviewing sales data, and creating strategic purchasing decisions per sales data.

6. Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma/GED required and 0 - 1 years' experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Must be organized, detail-oriented, comfortable in a busy, noisy environment, with the ability to interface with a wide range of constituent groups. A team player and with computer literacy are required. The work environment typically includes sitting at a desk or table, standing, walking, and stooping. Occasional lifting of 25 to 50 lbs. No supervisory responsibilities
