Job Summary:

The Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) has overall responsibility for the Information, Data Empowerment (Data Governance), and Analytics (IDEA) in Information Strategy and Services which collaboratively brings business units and technical resources together for stewardship and facilitation for the delivery of data and analytics to university constituents, leaders and executives. This position and collaborative entities help advance our University missions by facilitating conversations, initiating cross-function analysis and integration, improving data accessibility, and increasing analytical capabilities across the many levels of utilization on the CU Anschutz Medical Campus.

Data is a key strategic element used to inform strategic and operational decisions. This leader and service support the administrative data ecosystem and support the needs of our dynamic campus.

Key Responsibilities:

The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Information, Data Empowerment, and Analytics (AVC IDEA) serves

1. as the campus leader for collaboratively establishing a data strategy

2. which is supported by co-created data standards

3. to promote data integrity and strategically integrated information flows

4. for the clear purpose of producing high quality analytics systems improving the delivery of the University mission, strategy and objections through analytics structures and delivery.

This position is one of a highly collaborative leader partnering with campus administrative data leaders across the CU Anschutz Medical Campus to understand informational needs, operational data flows, and the influencing work processes. They work within the collaborative virtual data organization on the campus to strategically develop the tools and processes to support these needs. Key partners for strategic development and operational execution of the campus administrative data strategy for the AVC IDEA are the Vice Chancellor of Information Strategy and Services (VCISS), CIO, the AVC for Information Security and IT Compliance (AVCISIC), the AVC for Enterprise Architecture (AVCEA), Central Services Administration/Academic Services Administration business leaders, Senior Administration (Schools and Colleges) leaders, data stewards, and key data delivery SMEs.

Examples of Work Performed

50% Data Strategy and Execution
  • Collaboratively develop a data strategy for the University which is informed by our diverse stakeholder community.
  • Collaboratively execute and deliver Data Governance, Business Intelligence, Reporting and Dashboard. Key collaborators in this effort will be key business constituents along with the VCISS, CIO, AVCISIC, and AVCEA.
  • Through discussion, observation, and collaboration understand priorities and ongoing needs for business data analysis across the campus.

25% Data Governance, Stewardship and Management
  • Develop a collaborative campus data governance operating model and structure which interlocks with the multi-campus data governance operational model in development.
  • Maintain and operate this model when created finding opportunities for continuous improvement based on constituent feedback, business needs, and strategic priorities.
  • Oversee the appropriate steward and data management groups involved in the data governance domain. Mentoring and coaching domain leaders where appropriate.
  • Partner with Data Owners and their delegates on data governance, stewardship, and management responsibilities and opportunities for their given domains.

25% Core Application Data Alignment and Quality
  • Working with Data Owners and appropriate delegates to identify prioritized data quality goals and improvement processes.
  • Assist unit SMEs in developing annual data quality goals for each data domain with supporting analytics to support process tracking.
  • Serve as a sounding board for business owners in developing operating strategies for their data quality improvement goals.
  • Lead data domain element for application alignment and optimization initiatives. This process helps system users and owners modify their operational processes to best optimize and leverage the utilization of core systems and the data generated by their use.
  • Facilitate the data domain project component of migration from homegrown systems to core systems where applicable.

Work Location:

Hybrid – This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment. ISS strives for a high-flex work environment, meaning although this role can predominately be executed effectively with a remote schedule, there may be instances where in-person meetings and/or activities are needed. There is no minimum or prescribed in-person requirement. The work schedule will be based around core working hours in Colorado Mountain Time.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Higher Education, Business, or a closely related field.
    • Substitution: 4 years of professional or high-level technical experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree.
  • 10 years of experience in higher education operations or closely related field.
  • 10 years of progressive leadership including building senior executive relationships and experience setting the vision and strategy for a complex data driven portfolio.
  • 10 years of experience in data analytics, data quality, or data governance, preferably in higher education.
  • Experience with educating users and building data architecture/reporting/analytics around highly confidential data (eg. FERPA, HIPAA, etc)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree preferred in computer science, data science, or related field, or equivalent experience and relevant professional credentials.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Experience with student operational and lifecycle data.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $180,000 - $230,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
