In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only.

Job Summary
  1. Establish and maintain an active research program in their area of expertise.
  2. Contribute to the teaching, planning, development, and evaluation of courses and academic programs within the department of Medical Anatomical Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP).
  3. Promote, by precept and example, a general atmosphere of respect for knowledge, thought, and inquiry.
  4. Support students in the form of advisement as it relates to curriculum, wellness, and professional planning.
  5. The faculty member will engage in departmental, college, and university committees/services, with an expectation to additionally seek out ways to administratively support these bodies beyond appointments.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills, and abilities, or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  1. Academic expertise in the fields of Medical Anatomical Sciences, including gross anatomy, microanatomy, neuroanatomy, histology, and/or embryology, with particular emphasis on clinical relevance of basic science information.
  2. Ability to instruct, organize, maintain, and develop gross anatomy laboratory activities and material.
  3. Adequate command of effective communications, both written and verbal, digital and in-person, with groups and individuals.
  4. Ability to interact respectfully with people of all backgrounds.
  5. Ability to handle detail-oriented assignments and maintain confidentiality.
  6. Ability to handle a multitude of responsibilities in the college environment.


Required Qualifications
EDUCATION: Ph.D. degree in Anatomical Sciences, or equivalent degree, from anaccredited institution of higher learning.

Preferred Qualifications
EXPERIENCE: Two years of post-doctoral experience, including teaching at an accredited institution of higher learning, as well as a track record of high-quality research and scientific publications. Preference will be given to those individuals possessing experience teachingat a medical institution.

  • Establish and maintain an active and independent research program.
  • Continuously publish results of research in reputable journals and publication outlets in the field.
  • Attend and present at prominent conferences and seminars in the field.
  • Seek out and submit competitive applications to external granting agencies to support your research.
  • Utilize and work to improve WesternUs research resources.
  • Actively involve WesternU students in research activities, and publications as appropriate, and train them on standard research practices.

Teaching:
 
  • Maintain academic excellence and intellectual integrity in teaching.
  • Effective instruction of lectures, laboratory activities, seminars, and other teaching activities. 
  • Support the Offices of Academic Affairs (OAA) at COMP in maintaining the academic schedule, and the effectiveness, timeliness, and integrity of course assessments.
  • Support the curricular goals with clearly aligned learning objectives.
  • Effective collaboration with block leads, curriculum administrators, and supporting staff.

Service:

  • Attend scheduled faculty meetings. 
  • Actively contribute to institutional committees, whether elected or appointed.
  • Each faculty member will be assigned an appropriate number of student advisees. The faculty member shall advise assigned students regarding curriculum issues and graduation requirements.
  • Utilize University professional development resources.
  • Seek out ways to support the broader University system beyond college appointments. 
  • Participate in national and international professional organizations, editorial boards, committees, study sections, etc.
  • Pursue leadership roles in the field at the national and international levels.

While performing duties in this setting the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), and risk of electrical shock. The employee is regularly exposed to wet humid conditions (non-weather), moving mechanical parts, and high precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat (non-weather), and risk of radiation. The noise level in this setting is usually loud due to the noise of ventilation system and hydraulic body hoist.
