Salary:
Anticipated Hiring Salary: $3,796 per month
Note: This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.

Organizational Description:
The Lyles College of Engineering is one of eight academic schools and colleges at California State University, Fresno. The college offers six nationally accredited undergraduate degree programs and five graduate level programs and options. About 1700 students are enrolled in the various programs offered in the college. The Lyles College of Engineering has a dedicated Advising Center supporting the needs of the students. The Advising Center currently has one full time advisor and several counselor interns who assist with the various services.

Overview:
Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean and/or Director of Lyles College of Engineering Student Services, the incumbent provides counseling and advising services to help students achieve their educational and personal goals at California State University, Fresno. This position is responsible for providing academic advisement and counseling services to support student transition to the university and retention through graduation.

Position Summary:
Major Duties of the job include:
  • Academic counseling and advising support to help students successfully transition into the university
  • Evaluating transcripts and Degree Progress Reports (DPR) of incoming and continuing majors, providing assistance with academic advisement and planning, course scheduling and advising on general education and college majors
  • Interpreting university policies, regulations, and procedures
  • Assisting in developing and implementing other strategies and activities to support student success
  • Assisting in planning, organizing, and conducting freshmen and transfer student orientation sessions
  • Advising students on academic related issues which affect their progression toward a degree objective
  • Maintaining and updating advisee records
  • Making appropriate and effective referrals, serving as an advocate for students and consult with faculty, staff, and others on issues associated with student academic performance
  • Providing quality student services as demonstrated in patience, tact, courtesy, flexibility, and responsiveness to student needs
  • Maintaining a positive and effective working relationship with co-workers in a team-oriented environment and other members of the university community
  • Maintaining regular attendance and punctuality

    Secondary Duties of the job include:
  • Preparing academic advising resource materials for faculty, staff, and students
  • Presenting advising information to groups ranging from 10 people to 200+
  • Providing clear, concise, accurate, and effective oral and written communication
  • Participating in and providing support for Lyles College of Engineering events
  • Other duties as assigned by Associate Dean or Dean

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of:
    o Methods and problems of organization and program management
    o Research and interviewing techniques
    o Principles of individual and group counseling techniques and student development theory and practice
    o Study skills and retention intervention strategies
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to rapidly acquire:
    o Knowledge of University academic policies, procedures, and academic/degree requirements
    o Knowledge of practices, procedures, and activities of the Lyles College of Engineering Advising Center
    o Basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field
  • Ability to:
    o Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters
    o Obtain factual and interpretive information through interview
    o Interpret and apply program rules and regulations
    o Reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations
    o Collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and present clear and concise information orally and in written reports
    o Work with diverse student population
    o Make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program and service areas
    o Effectively organize and manage multiple tasks in a fast paced, team-oriented environment
    o Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, support staff, student organizations and other private and public agencies
  • A history of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations

    Education and Experience:
  • A Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university in the fields of higher education, counseling, sciences, public or business administration, or a job related field.
  • Equivalent to one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry or trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job related education may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

    Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in student services programs in a university advising center setting
  • Experience in the use of tools such as PeopleSoft Student Administration tools, Grades First, EAB
  • Knowledge of:
    o The evaluation of transcripts and computation of GPAs
    o College policies relating to transfers and change of majors
    o Transfer policies and procedures, and admission requirements
