PS Research Nurse

Job Summary

Assists in facilitating the conduct of clinical research by performing research and clinical duties. Provides patient care within the scope of nursing practice and in compliance with guidelines set by governing agencies. Serve as the clinical champion for a critical care study, ensuring that the research protocol is seamlessly integrated into daily patient care while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, regulatory compliance, and scientific integrity. Work closely with providers, ICU nurses, advanced practice providers, research staff, and study sponsors to coordinate complex clinical trial(s) involving critically ill patients. Actual skills and responsibilities may vary accordingly.

Responsibilities

Assesses and ensures subject safety during trial.
Proposes and negotiates alternatives for protocol (when allowable). Educates staff about the scientific aspects of the study, while prioritizing participant safety and high-quality patient care.
Perform clinical assessments and monitor participants for adverse events and protocol compliance. Applies pharmacological knowledge to help PI determine idiosyncrasies and unexpected results. Evaluates adverse events (AE), intervenes when necessary and reports details to PI. Conducts follow-up to determine resolution of AE. Reports serious AEs to IRB and sponsor.
Presents related information to the community for recruitment purposes or to other research professionals in a variety of settings.
Mentors and trains new and subordinate employees.
Helps determine personnel required to complete the trial and develop the timeline for trial completion. Reviews study-related data to ensure compliance with the study protocol.
Prepares emergency use report.
Manages pharmacokinetic collection and storage.
Relates lab results to PI and sponsor.
Ensures appropriate maintenance and calibration of equipment.
May perform bedside care.

Clinical Trial Leadership

Primary clinical coordinator assigned to the ICU trial.
Anticipate operational challenges and independently develop practical solutions to maintain study success.
Coordinate participant visits, procedures, laboratory collections, and follow-up, including screening and recruitment.
Maintain accurate source documentation and research records in accordance with GCP, FDA, HIPAA, and IRB requirements.
Develops and maintains all study regulatory requirements and logs.
Assist with IRB submissions.
Ensure compliance with institutional policies, sponsor requirements, and federal regulations.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Daily presence in the ICU and close collaboration with clinical teams caring for critically ill patients. Office environment.

Often: Infectious disease; oils (including air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids); hazards (including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of lifespan growth and development and the ability to assess patient status data and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications
RN license in the state of Utah plus two years related experience required. Depending on area of assignment, CCRP, ACRP-CRC, SOCRA-CCRP certification may be required. Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire. . Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
