Job Summary:

The University of Colorado, College of Nursing, is seeking a Medical Assistant (Open Rank) for a (1.0 FTE) benefits-eligible position at The Community Health Clinic (CHC), Aurora, CO (zip code: 80045). This position will primarily provide quality care to patients at the Primary Care Clinic on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Applicants should be educated and trained as either Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), or Medical Assistants (MAs).

Clinic Description:

Community Health Clinic is a nurse-led Primary Care Clinic that sits at the heart of the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. Our main populations are students, staff, and employees of the medical campus; however, we also cater to the medical needs of the larger Aurora Community. Our clinic is nurse-led and is run by Nurse Practitioners who oversee the overall function and operations of the clinic. The Clinic falls under the umbrella of the CCA, which is the Clinical and Community Affairs department of the College of Nursing at the University of Colorado. Key Responsibilities:
  • Upholds strict compliance with University and professional policies and procedures, including CDC guidelines for illness reporting, temperature checks, masking, and hand hygiene during flu seasons and pandemics
  • Greets patients and families and completes standard check-in and registration for both pediatric and adult populations, in person and through telehealth tools
  • Measures and documents vital signs (notifying providers of abnormal values), completes medication reconciliation, and records patient interviews, history, chief complaints, and preventative screens in the EHR
  • Prepares patients for examinations and procedures and assists providers as needed
  • Performs clinical procedures within scope, including ear lavage, injections, phlebotomy, proper lab specimen collection and handling, basic wound care, and first aid
  • Prepares, administers, and electronically documents medications and immunizations within scope and with provider authorization, maintains immunization records, and completes annual immunization training on schedule
  • Provides patient education (office policies, lab results, medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up), handles clerical and administrative duties such as reception coverage, scheduling, faxing, and timely message response, and communicates effectively with staff, clinics, pharmacies, and other departments regarding patient care

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Medical Assistant I:
  • Completion of an accredited medical assistant program.

Medical Assistant II:
  • Completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
  • One (1) year of experience working as a medical assistant.

Substitutions:

Medical Assistant:
  • One (1) year of medical assistant experience may substitute for completion of an accredited program and is in addition to any required years of experience.

Nursing Aide / Licensed Practical Nurse / Emergency Medical Technician:
  • Completion of an accredited program, Colorado state licensure, and years of experience in any of these fields may substitute for medical assistant specific requirements.

Current Registered Nursing Student:
  • Colorado State Certified Nurse Aide licensure may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
  • Completion of Medical/Surgical Nursing I course with a passing grade may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program.

Registered Nurse / Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) / Doctor of Medicine (MD):
  • Completion of an accredited program in any of these fields (or similar) may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

Medical Assistant I:
  • Experience with or formal training in handling bloodborne pathogens.
  • Experience with or formal training in complying with OSHA Biohazard Safety Standards.
  • Experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center and/or Patient-Centered Medical Home environment.
  • Ability to speak Spanish and English on a daily basis to communicate clinical terminology.

Medical Assistant II:
  • Experience with or formal training in retrieving imaging studies, querying patient record database (i.e., COHRIO, or similar).
  • Experience with injections, vaccine administration, and documentation.
  • Experience training new hires.
  • Experience with or formal training in phlebotomy and point-of-care testing.
  • Experience with or formal training in working with a population/subpopulation related to the job (pediatric, OB-GYN, geriatric; refugees, or others).
  • Ability to speak Spanish and English on a daily basis to communicate clinical terminology.

Conditions of Employment (All Levels):
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship. We are unable to provide work visa sponsorship or employment authorization for this position now or in the future.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPR certification by the date of hire.
  • Must be willing and able to remain credentialed and ensure credentialing materials stay current.
  • Must be willing and able to work until 8 pm on designated extended-hours shifts as needed.
  • Availability to work weekends on an infrequent, rotating, as-needed basis.
  • Must be willing and able to work in a normal patient care environment with some exposure to biological hazards and infectious diseases.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (All Levels):
  • Ability to take direction and utilize a considerable degree of independent judgment and work priorities.
  • Exemplary organizational skills and ability to prioritize.
  • Unconditional ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Proficient in using various computer applications, EHR, and other tools to communicate with staff and complete appropriate clinical documentation.
  • Knowledge of current medical procedures and understanding of basic medical terminology.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with patients, their families, and other members of the health care team.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to HIPAA and OSHA guidelines.
  • Basic knowledge of Colorado state immunization requirements.
  • Ability to work with both Pediatric, OB, and Adult populations; able to flex between clinics as staffing warrants.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:
  • Medical Assistant I: $42,156 to $45,528
  • Medical Assistant II: $44,256 to $47,798

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
