The Office of Information Technology encourages applications for a Senior Data Experience Professional! This role works directly with the Assistant Director of Data Experience and Visualization in the Data & Analytics (D&A) division to improve how institutional data is accessed, understood, and used across CU Boulder.

In collaboration with the Assistant Director, this position leads the design and evolution of the D&A data experience across digital platforms, ensuring that institutional data, D&A websites, dashboards, visualizations, reports, documentation, and services are intuitive, accessible, and aligned with user needs. The role blends user experience design, content strategy, and data-informed decision-making to create cohesive and engaging user interfaces that reduce friction, improve usability, and increase the value and impact of institutional data for campus partners.

As a senior professional-level position, the incumbent operates with a high degree of independence, applying advanced knowledge and judgment to solve complex, often ambiguous problems. The incumbent also serves as a resource to colleagues and helps communicate data experience principles across teams.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Data Experience Platform Management
  • Independently maintain, update, and improve content and user-facing data experiences across the Data & Analytics website and related digital platforms, ensuring information, dashboards, visualizations, and reports are accurate, current, clearly organized, and aligned with institutional standards.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director, plan and complete regular updates and enhancements to websites, dashboards, reporting interfaces, and related digital experiences to support evolving institutional priorities and initiatives.
  • Help design and maintain data service intake processes, including online request forms and workflow touchpoints, with attention to usability, clarity for requestors, and practicality for internal review and fulfillment.
  • Partner with colleagues across the D&A team to support the broader data experience vision, priorities, and standards for how institutional data, dashboards, reports, and documentation are surfaced, accessed, and understood by campus partners.
  • Coordinate with developers, analysts, and report creators to ensure embedded dashboards, visualizations, and interactive reporting experiences are intuitive, accessible, visually consistent, and aligned with user needs.
  • Document decisions, interface patterns, content standards, and maintenance practices to promote consistency, clarity, scalability, and the long-term sustainability of digital data experiences.

Digital Data Experience Design
  • Supervise the creation and iteration of user-centered content and interface experiences for projects across D&A, including websites, dashboards, visualizations, reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with CU Boulder's Accessibility and Usability Office, developers, designers, and analysts to create equitable and consistent experiences for users of assistive technologies across web and data visualization platforms.
  • Apply accessibility, usability, and data visualization standard processes when creating and updating pages, dashboards, and interactive reporting experiences, proactively identifying issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop and maintain style guides, templates, and approved interface components for digital data experiences, including visualizations, dashboards, navigation structures, and written content.
  • Collaborate with data and reporting teams to improve the clarity, interpretability, and visual presentation of institutional data for a variety of campus audiences.
  • Track and manage project progress by updating and maintaining records in the D&A work management system (JIRA); respond to and resolve tickets, ensuring clear documentation and effective communication.

Data Experience Design Research and Analysis
  • Take a user-aware approach to evaluating digital data experiences for different audiences, identifying areas of confusion, friction, accessibility barriers, or unmet needs across websites, dashboards, reports, and related tools.
  • Engage with campus members to research and develop a thorough understanding of user needs, behaviors, and challenges related to accessing and interpreting institutional data.
  • Use data from Google Analytics, dashboard usage metrics, and other sources to find opportunities for improving navigation, usability, engagement, and overall effectiveness of digital data experiences.
  • Monitor website, dashboard, and reporting usage patterns and user feedback to inform prioritization, iterative improvements, and ongoing maintenance needs.
  • Support the D&A team's success by identifying and tracking metrics that demonstrate the effectiveness, usability, and impact of institutional data products and services.
  • Document and share findings from user research, analytics, and design analysis to develop informed decision-making and facilitate collaborative insights.
  • Advocate for user experience, accessibility, and effective data communication principles across D&A initiatives and projects.

Professional Development
  • Maintain proficiency, deepen, and acquire new knowledge in data visualization, data practices, and user experience design, writing, research, etc.
  • Know the latest on best practices and standards related to web and data accessibility, sharing relevant guidance and insights with colleagues as appropriate.

What We Can Offer

  • The annual salary range is $95,000 - $104,480.

What We Require

  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in information science, user experience, communications, computer science, data science, psychology, social sciences, or related field. A combination of education and relevant experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • 3 years of experience doing the following:
    • Using written and verbal communication skills to document findings, writing recommendations and presenting user-friendly content.
    • Working with data in some form - such as analyzing website metrics, working with dashboards, or querying databases.
    • Thinking from a user or audience perspective to explain complex information in clear and accessible ways.
    • Designing, conducting, and analyzing UX research studies using a variety of methodologies.


What You Will Need

  • An intellectual curiosity about higher education and how data analytics can advance the university's mission.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced skill level in web UI/UX technologies and design
  • Deep understanding of standard processes in user-centered writing/communication
  • Ease learning and using new tools and systems (e.g., web analytics platforms, content management systems, survey tools, or data analysis environments.
  • Willingness to engage with technical or analytical work when needed, such as basic coding, querying data, or troubleshooting data and content issues-even if this is not your primary background.
  • Able to write reports that highlight and explain conclusions from data analysis.
  • Knowledge of data visualization standard processes and able to apply these practices to create accessible and informative figures, charts, and dashboards.
  • Experience and proficiency documenting project plans and specifications, code, data sources, research methods, and analysis.
  • Proven proactive work style and creative problem-solving skills, attentive to details, quality, and follow-through with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability in and desire to stay ahead of emerging technologies and adapting to new technologies and tools.
  • Ability to understand and incorporate the perspectives of diverse audiences, including leadership and non-technical users.
  • Able to work independently, and in team environments and contribute to a positive work culture.
  • Commitment to act in alignment with OIT, the campus and the university's values.
