CU Boulder encourages applications for a Campus Bus Driver - Trainee position! This position provides the necessary skills, training, and experience to acquire a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Passenger Endorsement to drive university fleet commercial motor vehicles. The role is expected to complete required training, including training for a Class B CDL with Passenger Endorsement (classroom, range, road training, & on the job).
This role will be trained in a variety of vehicles and classroom techniques. Once certified to operate specific vehicles, the incumbent ensures prompt transit for campus affiliates and guests in consideration of their needs, vehicle operational capacity, and road conditions. The position provides safe transportation in university buses and other types of vehicles to and from various destinations. Trips involve fixed routes and charter/shuttle services that may include driving in the mountains, on freeways, urban, local, and long-distance driving.
Per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, all drivers must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.

Transportation Services provides comprehensive transit, fleet management, and maintenance to serve the faculty, staff, students, and visitors at the University of Colorado Boulder. The University of Colorado vehicle fleet numbers over 600; a robust transit system moving 1.4 million riders per year at the University of Colorado-Boulder campus; and guidance for driver operations for campuses located in Aurora, Boulder, and Denver.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Trainee
- This position is designed to receive training to become a proficient bus driver. Must successfully complete the following qualifications within the first 30 days of hire: Pre-employment drug test, background, DOT physical, DOT paperwork, 4-hour Defensive Driving Course, 15-passenger van training, other university required/suggested trainings, acquire a Commercial Driver's License learner's permit, and complete training to test for CDL Class B with passenger endorsement. The role will complete a six-month training program. Upon successful completion of the training program and incumbents' ability to meet minimum requirements of the target class, the position will move to the position of Equipment Operator II (Staff Bus Driver).
Vehicle Operations
- Safely transport people using university vehicles, and meet the appropriate certification requirements to operate vehicles. Navigate a variety of routine and contracted routes on a timed schedule with passenger safety, road and traffic conditions, and vehicle operational capacity under consideration. Communicate information in a professional manner.
Reports
- Complete pre and post-trip inspections, recording results and ensuring all forms are filled out properly for CDL paperwork. This includes recording passenger count, mileage, fuel, and other fluid usages, completing a statistical summary by route.
Vehicle Inspections
- Conduct pre- and post-trip safety inspections to confirm vehicles suitability for route completion. May add fluids and perform other maintenance tasks if needed. Should a vehicle fail during a pre-trip inspection or during a route, driver will evaluate or operate a suitable alternative and notify dispatch and management.
- There may be other unspecified duties as directed to maintain the operational readiness of the department. Complete continuing education to establish or maintain proficiency in vehicle operational capacities.

- The Buff Bus service runs every day of the week for up to 22 hours a day. This position may be required to work alternative shifts to accommodate our dedication to serving the campus.

What We Can Offer
The hourly pay rate for this position will start at $22.50, and upon obtaining a CDL, the wage will increase to $25.00 per hour.

What We Require
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Possess a valid state-issued driver's license with no restrictions. Have no state or federal restrictions preventing you from obtaining a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction.
- Obtain a CDL Learner's Permit within 3 weeks of hire and a CDL within 2 months of hire.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment CDOT drug screen.
- Obtain a DOT medical card before your start date.
What You Will Need
- Ability to be accountable and dependable in meeting work schedules.
- Ability to progress through CDL training to obtain CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement within 2 months of hire date and continue to progress to be promoted to Equipment Operator II/Staff Bus Driver within 6 months of training.
- Ability to exercise a high level of individual responsibility.
- Able to be welcoming towards and effectively interact with individuals with diverse backgrounds, skills, and abilities.
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, use appropriate safety equipment, use appropriate PPE, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate personnel.
