Job Summary
The Housing Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks to support the operation and upkeep of University Housing facilities. The position ensures that building systems, equipment, and furnishings remain safe, clean, and functional to provide a high-quality living environment for residents.
This is an entry-level position that requires foundational knowledge in multiple trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and general building maintenance. The incumbent works independently or as part of a team to perform preventive maintenance, respond to service requests, and assist in maintaining compliance with applicable safety and building codes.

Responsibilities
1. Performs general maintenance and repairs on housing facilities, equipment, and furnishings.
2. Assists in the installation, repair, and upkeep of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry systems.
3. Conducts regular inspections of assigned areas to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.
4. Completes work orders and preventive maintenance tasks in a timely and professional manner.
5. Maintains tools, materials, and equipment in good working condition.
6. Ensures compliance with university safety standards, procedures, and applicable codes.
7. Provides excellent customer service to residents and university staff.
8. Maintenance techs participate in after-hours or emergency on-call rotations. (Regular working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The position also participates in a rotating on-call schedule, which includes an extended shift from 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and responsibility for responding to after-hours maintenance calls via an on-call phone from 9:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Rotations ensure 24-hour maintenance coverage for University Housing facilities.)
Facilities / Maintenance Technician, I Perform general maintenance and repairs including light carpentry, basic electrical, HVAC, grounds maintenance, and arranging furniture and partitions. Assist employees with internal moves. May work with specialized outside contractors. May have some formal training in one or more trades. Performs routine tasks as directed and under close supervision.Requires little to no related experience.This is an Entry-Level position in the Support track.
Facilities / Maintenance Technician, IIPerform general maintenance and repairs including light carpentry, basic electrical, HVAC, grounds maintenance, and arranging furniture and partitions. Assist employees with internal moves. May work with specialized outside contractors. May have some formal training in one or more trades. Completes routine tasks under moderate supervision.Requires at least 1 year of related experience.This is an Intermediate Level position in the Support track.
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Preferences
- One (1) year of related experience demonstrating knowledge of general maintenance and repair techniques, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (one year of education may substitute for two years of related work experience).
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work from step ladders or scaffolding as required.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- A valid Utah driver's license may be preferred depending on departmental needs.
- Experience working in a housing, residential life, or higher education environment.
- Basic knowledge of building systems including plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.
- Demonstrated ability to use maintenance management systems or electronic work order platforms.
