The Reprographics Specialist works independently under general supervision to perform complex technical duties typically in more than one core function. Work requires higher level skills and a broader or more specialized knowledge base of reprographics, as well as working knowledge of and the ability to operate the digital and computer equipment and systems used in printing and copying. May be responsible for providing lead work direction to student assistants.

Job Summary:

May be responsible for providing lead work direction to student assistants.

Responsibilities:

Digital Printing

  • Works Independently, under general supervision, to maintain color calibrations, inventory of supplies, and overall functionality of various color and monochrome printers, demonstrating a broad knowledge of reprographics systems and operations.

  • Utilizes EFI Fiery RIP Software applications to maximize cost savings and minimize use of papers, toners, and shorten run lengths for faster throughput.

  • Inspect incoming files for print quality, visual identity and graphic standards, and copyright compliance, applying working knowledge of desktop publishing and campus graphics standards.

  • Processes digital print and envelope orders using various paper stocks, envelope sizes, and image quality enhancements as required.

  • Evaluate final prints for image quality, consistency, and adherence to production specifications.

  • Work with paper catalog settings for specialty papers and adjust feed trays and settings to accommodate changes in humidity, static and other environmental factors that affect print quality.

  • Use design software to ensure that the design is sized correctly for blank items for sublimation printing.

  • For sublimation printing, orient artwork/mirror image to fit the blanks. Print the design using sublimation printer, prepare for transfer by preheating heat press and adhering print to blank using heat resistant tape. Apply heat and pressure for specific time based on blank being used. Allow item to cool and inspect for any imperfections.

    Large Format Printing and Finishing

  • Works under general supervision to inspect and pre-flight digital images using Adobe Acrobat and impose files using Onyx Production House, Mimaki Rasterlink, and Flexi software, demonstrating broad knowledge of digital reprographics systems and prepress operations.

  • Prints Files to Canon Aqueous and Mimaki UV wide format printing machines as required based on media selections, ensuring proper color management and material compatibility.

  • Monitors print qualities, ink, and media levels throughout the printing process.

  • Operates GBS Spire III wide format thermal laminator - including loading of media rolls.

  • Installs media into banner stand hardware.

  • Performs contour cutting on specialty projects and medias.

  • Mounts printed vinyls to coroplast and sintra rigid boards.

  • Cuts, trims, and finishes banners with banner tape, squeegee, and grommets.

    Bindery and Finishing

  • Operates a wide range of equipment including but not limited to automated paper cutters, Horizon folders, booklet makers, folders, creasers, business card slitters/cutters, 3-hole drills, and padding racks for carbonless and standard padding orders.

  • Operates the Perfecta paper cutter and has the knowledge of changing the cutter blade. Knowledge of other precision cutting equipment as needed to prepare paper stock for printing and bindery processes.

  • Operates MBM Velocity and Count creasing machines.

  • Prepares completed orders for delivery by shrink wrapping or boxing and attaching order forms, and perform other related duties as assigned.

    Pre-Press System Operation

  • Works independently, under general supervision to process PDF files and output for digital printing.

  • Utilize pre-press interface software as needed for press operation.

  • Performs basic Graphic design to clean up files and in some instances recreate artwork. Other classification related duties as assigned.

    Customer Service

  • Provides complex technical support for specialty orders and consultations for cost savings and rush orders.

  • Assists clients with clarifications on paper types and online ordering.

  • Utilizes the FileMaker database to track orders, confirm deliveries, and collaborate with delivery assistants to ensure that time-sensitive projects are handled effectively.
    • Other Classification Related Duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of related work experience.


    Required Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of and the ability to use standard PC and Macintosh platforms, their operating systems and applicable software.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to operate a wide range of reprographics equipment and systems, including, but not limited to, the ability to operate pre-press equipment/software, high speed copiers (black & white and color and digital envelope press), large format printers and cutters, and bindery equipment. Ability to learn new equipment and processes quickly, as well as troubleshoot applicable equipment. Requires basic knowledge of large format and reprographics systems and operations.
  • Ability to produce basic variable data on high speed copiers.
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing and graphic software and the ability to manipulate and translate media, as well as process and enhance electronic files through pre-press software. Working knowledge of campus graphics standards and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of manipulating color values and ensuring consistent color throughout the job using applicable equipment.
  • Ability to manipulate and set up files and equipment in the production of a wide range of specialized material and media such as but not limited to posters, banners, magnets, signs, and fabric printing.
  • Work may require working knowledge of applicable U.S. Postal Service requirements and processes related to standard and automated mailing processes and other shipping and receiving methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust and adapt to a changing work environment and requirements including the ability to quickly learn to operate applicable new equipment/software and to obtain certifications when applicable.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills.
  • If assigned, ability to provide lead work direction to student assistants.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Two years of experience in operation of digital printing systems, color management, general binding and digital finishing experience and good interpersonal skills. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
    Valid CA Driver's License

    Compensation and Benefits:

    The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

    Initial salary step placement will be (Step 1) $3,738 - (Step 10) $4,467 per month for qualified candidates.

    CSU Classification Salary Step Range: $3,738 - $5,446 per month (Step 1 - Step 20)

    Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Conditions of Employment

    Background Check

    Drivers License Check

    Physical Exam

    Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
