Temporary Dispatcher

The College seeks a Temporary Dispatcher to serve in Campus Safety Services as the first point of contact for our community. The Temporary Dispatcher does not maintain a regular schedule but is called upon when support is needed. Schedules and hours are subject to change based on the needs of the department.

Responsibilities
  • Handle emergency and routine calls
  • Maintain the daily logs
  • Dispatch officers as needed, monitor multiple computerized alarm and card access systems, and appropriately respond to and direct other calls
  • Responsible for checking out equipment, keys, and access cards
  • Monitor and make use of emergency paging systems
  • Other duties as needed


Qualifications:
  • Ability to provide exemplary customer service and use excellent communication skills to build rapport over the telephone.
  • Ability to handle routine and emergency (including medical and psychological) situations with excellent judgment, including when multiple situations arise at the same time.
  • Attention to detail and strong computer competence.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a public safety or security-related role is preferred.
  • Familiarity and interest in working with college-age students is required, with a strong commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Applicants should possess oral and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively and positively with others are essential.
  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of application.


Training & Onboarding

Temporary dispatchers undergo the same rigorous 160-hour training program as our full-time dispatch officers. This includes 150 hours of dispatch center training and 10 hours of field orientation with campus safety supervisors and officers.
  • Training Schedule
    During the initial 160 hours, you will mirror your trainer's schedule (8 or 10-hour shifts) across days, evenings, and nights. Shift-length flexibility can be discussed with the Communications Supervisor.
  • Post-Training
    Once training is complete, you may be called in at any point as support is needed. Hours are not guaranteed and vary based on department needs, which may include planned vacation coverage, additional staff for special events, and short-notice sick calls. A typical shift is 8 hours long. Temporary dispatchers can discuss shift-length flexibility with the Communications Supervisor.


Rate of Pay: $19.00 per hour.

In addition to the base rate, this position is eligible for shift differentials for evening, night, and weekend hours:

2nd Shift (5 pm - 12 am): +$1.00/hour

3rd Shift (12 am - 7 am): +$2.00/hour

Weekend Premium: An additional $0.55/hour is added to all shifts worked between midnight Friday and midnight Sunday.
