Job Summary
The Office of Precollege Outreach and Engagement at CU Boulder welcomes applications for Resident Advisors! Resident Advisors (RA's) are responsible for ensuring the wellness and overall positive experience of University of Colorado Upward Bound Program summer participants. RA's serve as valuable program resources and have many different leadership responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities include being first-responders, forming relationships with and among their residents/peers, and serving as a positive peer leader. RA's also must implement CUUB standards and University policies to ensure safety and cultivate environments that are welcoming and conducive to living and learning.
RA's are selected for their leadership skills, interpersonal abilities, capacity for partnership, positive and caring attitudes, and sense of responsibility. RA's are responsible for fostering and facilitating a positive community among residents, promoting a safe and comfortable living environment, and serving as a representative and role model for the University and the Upward Bound Program. The Office of Precollege Outreach and Engagement, partners with communities across Colorado and beyond to provide first-generation students and their families with comprehensive college preparation and social development programming.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
The responsibilities of a Residential Advisor are extensive and require flexibility when working in a constantly evolving environment. Some of the responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Student Contact
- Supervise 5-9 low-income and/or first-generation high school students from targeted communities.
- Maintain regular communication with residents through daily RA meetings, text messaging, social media, bulletin boards, etc.
- Facilitate daily RA group meetings to share updates and program information.
- Foster positive interactions among students while acknowledging and valuing diverse backgrounds and perspectives within the community.
- Support students with academic, personal, and social concerns, referring them to appropriate resources as needed.
- Mediate conflict between students and staff using conflict resolution skills.
- Safely transport students using minivans and/or 12-15 passenger vans, in accordance with program and university policies.
- Demonstrate leadership by actively upholding and promoting the mission, vision, and O.U.R. F.I.R.E. values of CU Upward Bound (CUUB).
- Participate in an on-call duty rotation, remaining readily available and reachable as required.
- Serve as a Mandatory Reporter in accordance with university and program policies.
- Address, confront, and document inappropriate or concerning behavior in a timely and professional manner.
- Assess situations and make prompt, sound decisions during emergencies.
- Ensure students follow all safety protocols established by CUUB and the University.
- Implement student adherence to the meal check-in policy and buddy system requirements.
- Follow established protocols and procedures when incidents or concerns arise.
- Hold students accountable for violations of the CUUB Code of Conduct, O.U.R. F.I.R.E. values, and all University and residential hall policies.
- Assist students in understanding, establishing, and maintaining CUUB and University standards and expectations.
- Encourage and contribute to the development of an environment that involves the participation of all students.
- Facilitate and implement strategies and activities that foster connection and community among students.
- Uphold and implement the CUUB Code of Conduct, O.U.R. F.I.R.E. values, and all University and residential hall policies.
- Create a supportive, approachable environment that encourages open communication between you and students.
- Provide guidance and information to help students adjust to the Boulder community and fully benefit from the college experience.
- Collaborate closely with fellow Residential Advisors, Residential Supervisors, and Program Directors.
- Establish and maintain positive, professional communication with University staff and other program coordinators.
- Participate fully in all required trainings, daily staff meetings, and nightly residential staff meetings.
- Work collaboratively with students, supervisors, and directors to foster a supportive, inclusive, and welcoming residential environment.
- Practice positive workplace relationships with fellow staff and other program coordinators.
- Support and empower fellow Residential Advisors, supervisors, and directors through teamwork and mutual accountability.
- Use the strength of the CUUB team by seeking help, sharing concerns, and collaborating with staff and supervisors, reinforcing a culture of support, accountability, and teamwork.
- Assist the Director and Assistant Director with projects and program documentation.
- Update and maintain the Blumen database.
- Perform copying, filing, and other administrative tasks as needed.
- Design and create program flyers and itineraries.
- Print weekly schedules, meeting agendas, and other program materials.
- Organize and file student records accurately and securely.
What You Should Know
- This is a temporary, full-time role that will last from May 29th - July 18th.
- The schedule is anticipated to be approximately 40 hours per week. A schedule will be provided in advance.
- Each RA will receive 2 days off per week after the first week of training.
- This role must pass a University required background check.
- This position will attend a required week long orientation before student arrival.
- This position may be required to drive a rental van. Valid driver's license is preferred.
- Commitment to spend the full 7 weeks on the CU Boulder campus is required.
What We Can Offer
The hourly pay range for this temporary position is $18.90 - $24.00.
Benefits
Temporary positions at the University of Colorado are not benefits-eligible, however, all positions are eligible for paid sick leave.
