Job Summary:
The Associate Director will ensure that stakeholders understand and support the coordination and expectations unique to the Physician Scientist training and career pathway and facilitate students' progress to successful academic research careers. The Associate Director will have a leadership role on our MSTP T32 award, the MSTP Executive Committee, and various School of Medicine and Graduate School Committees as assigned. The Associate Director will understand and help revise key policies and processes of MD stakeholders when appropriate and work closely with the MSTP Director to integrate the curriculum across the long training program. Participation in the annual MSTP Conference, MSTP Retreat, MSTP Student Council meetings, MSTP social activities, and individual student advising and counseling is also required. The Associate Director runs the MSTP Foundations of Doctoring preceptorship course, the Capstone Clinical Re-Entry course, and the Trailhead/Electives Return-to-Clinics courses. The Clinical Associate Program Director works closely with the Associate Program Director for Thesis Studies and the various MD Trek phase teams to facilitate integrated training and transition between the phases and to support the vision and plans of the Program Director working closely with the MSTP administrative team.
All MSTP leadership serve as key advisors to MSTP students, coaching and facilitating excellence in MSTP student achievement in both clinical and research work. They serve a prominent role as an individual advisor particularly in the last years of MSTP education, meeting with students regularly in both 1:1 and group settings to ensure that students move through the program and match successfully into top research-oriented residency training programs.

This position reports directly to the MSTP Program Director within ORE and has a dotted reporting line structure to the Vice Executive Dean of Medical Education.

Key Responsibilities:
25% - MSTP Leadership and Administration:
o Brings relevant topics related to MSTP medical education to this committee for discussion and policy development, as appropriate
o Helps to draft policy proposals and updates in these discussions for presentation at Executive Committee Meetings
o Brings updates on student progress and students of concern for medical-phase students
o Captures relevant items for reporting/discussion at MSTP Executive Committee Meeting and Leadership Meetings
o Serves as a primary source for questions and concerns related to these policies from students, faculty, and staff
o Develops and revises plans for medical phase training and transitions for MSTP handbook.
o Serves as an admissions committee 1:1 interviewer for six interview afternoons annually (at least 3 hours per interview day)
o Attends MSTP recruitment activities during the MSTP Second Look, typically an all-day event occurring on a Friday in March
o These include a leadership retreat, the MSTP Annual Program Retreat, and Graduation Dinner, and other MSTP social events.
25% - Academic Advising and Progress Support:
o MSTP Thesis Committees meet twice per year, each meeting lasting two hours
o Additional advisory sessions may be needed as required for each student's progression
o Meets with each student ahead of their transitions, once in the Fall term of the academic year prior to their planned return to MD as a class (group meeting) and once 1:1 during the Spring term of the academic year prior to their planned return to MD. This schedule may be changed as we transition from legacy to Trek students.
o Ensures that all transitioning students have a complete and approved academic plan/schedule for their flexible re-entry that addresses their unique personal goals for residency and the remainder of their clinical education
o Advisory meetings occasionally require evening meetings to accommodate trainee's clinical schedule
o May participate in other group advisory sessions as appropriate
o Writes MSTP supplemental letters for student's ERAS MSPE in collaboration with the Program Director and School of Medicine leadership.
25% - Course Direction:
o MSTP7655 - MSTP Foundations of Doctoring (two semesters per year; all thesis students).
o MSTP7755 - MSTP Clinical Capstone (one-week inpatient medicine course in final semester of thesis years).
o MSTP8033 - MSTP Trailhead and Return-to-Clinics Electives (designs flexible re-entry program of inpatient medicine or surgery and appropriately selected electives in collaboration with clinical partners and SOM Alpine phase team).
25% - Program Representation:
o Advocates for physician-scientist education and training with MD curriculum deans and program administrators.

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is an NIH T32-supported program at the University of Colorado which oversees the MD/PhD training for a program of 80+ students over eight years of an integrated physician-scientist curriculum. The Associate Director for Clinical Education is responsible for overseeing MSTP curriculum and programmatic processes, especially those related to transitions between graduate and medical school education and residency applications. The Associate Director serves as an essential liaison between the MSTP and School of Medicine curriculum/administrative leadership across all phases of training. The Associate Director also participates in the MSTP admissions process and graduate program activities as needed and frequently serves as the graduate program MSTP thesis committee representative.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The salary range for this position is set between $25,000 - $50,000, representing an estimated 0.20 FTE of salary support plus benefits. The final offer will be capped at $250,000 annually and will depend on the individual's current 1.0 FTE salary.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
