Job Description Summary


This position is supported by grant funding and is available only through the duration of the grant, which is scheduled to expire on January 5, 2027.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision of a director, associate director, or supervisor, provide technical assistance related to course placement in English, English as a Second Language, math and other designated credit and noncredit classes. Responsible for proctoring distance education examinations for Cuesta College and other institutions, assisting with orientation, and performing other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Testing Proctor is distinguished from other positions in that the incumbent will provide support for distance education students including administering examinations at all educational sites as well as at other off-campus locations as necessary. Incumbents will perform technical work associated with course placement, and perform other duties related to overseeing activity in the testing lab.

The incumbent in this position will promote student learning outcomes by ensuring that the delivery of examinations is conducted in a reliable, valid, and standardized manner and that placement activity is in accordance with statewide regulations.

The main campus is located along scenic Highway 1, west of San Luis Obispo and east of the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. Cuesta College has a North County Campus in Paso Robles, and South County Center, in Arroyo Grande.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Administer examinations and monitor activity at the San Luis Obispo Campus, North County Campus, and South County Centers as well as at other off-campus locations as necessary;
  • Provide support for distance education students; distribute and collect examinations; provide instructions and technical assistance to students; verify student identification and assure appropriate paperwork; explain and assure student compliance with established testing policies, procedures, rules, timelines and requirements;
  • Collect and review examination forms for accuracy, completeness and compliance with established requirements; assist students with completing forms as needed;
  • Serve as central point of contact for distance education proctoring requests; communicate with students, faculty, college personnel and outside institutions to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns;
  • Administer noncredit placement and progress tests according to established procedures; determine and assure proper distribution of placements results according to established timelines;
  • Input placement and progress results and other data into an assigned computer system; establish and maintain records and files; assure adherence to established timelines; initiate queries and generate computerized reports; verify and assure accuracy of data;
  • Explain examination alternatives, disabled student accommodations and appointments as requested;
  • Prepare equipment, computer labs and other facilities for examinations, assure adequate and appropriate supplies,
  • Explain placement results as requested and refer students to proper support services as needed;
  • Assist students with completion of online orientation and placement process;
  • Operate copiers, computers, designated software, peripherals and a variety of audio-visual equipment;
  • Maintain testing facilities in a neat, clean, secure and orderly condition; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
  • Minimum high school graduate or equivalent.
Preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (oral and written);
  • Associate degree;
  • Coursework in mathematics, statistics, English or related field.
Experience:
Required
  • One year of experience working with placement examinations, proctoring, or related functions.
Knowledge of:
  • Practices, procedures and techniques involved in administering, scoring and processing a variety of examinations;
  • Educational placement principles, practices and theories;
  • Policies and objectives of assigned programs and activities;
  • Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and
  • District and statewide policies and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.
Physical ability to:
  • Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Lift and/or carry 25 pounds; and
  • Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.

Hours: Monday through Thursday 9:30 am- 6:00 pm, Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
