Assistant Director, Summer Term Pre-College Programs

About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Pre-College, the Assistant Director of Academic Operations works with the Director and other senior program staff to develop, manage, and evaluate Boston University Summer Term Pre-College programs, which enroll over 1,500 high school students each summer, with specific focus on overseeing and implementing the academic components of the pre-college program portfolio. Duties include supervising many complex administrative, academic, and financial tasks.

The Assistant Director serves as a conduit between the senior program staff and Pre-College Program Managers to ensure effective implementation of strategic goals and coordination of all logistical aspects of program operations. Core responsibilities include establishing and maintaining academic relationships with faculty and staff across the University and overall recruitment, hiring, training and supervision of instructional staff; supporting the academic success of program participants; leading new program and/or curricular development; creation and enforcement of program policies; and contributing to the adjudication of disciplinary violations and addressing parent/guardian concerns when programs are in session.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages the academic operations of the summer term pre-college programs office, ensuring coordination and consistency across multiple unique programs.

  • Drives curricular innovation to add new programs and courses, and evaluate existing offerings. Creates and maintains relationships with colleges, departments, and faculty.

  • Contributes to conversations about program policies with the Director and Assistant Director who manages residential and student life.

  • Contributes general oversight of admissions processes and systems.

  • Reserves needed classrooms and other academic program spaces, approves orders for instructional materials, field trip expenses and other items required by instructors for course needs.

  • Supervises at least two full-time Program Manager-level roles; may also supervise seasonal student and administrative workers.

  • Interviews, hires, supervises, and evaluates part-time faculty/adjuncts, graduate students and other instructional staff to teach in the pre-college programs, including the recruitment of RISE faculty mentors.

  • Manages job offer/contract system in PowerBI and assures compliance with BU POM (Protection of Minors) policies and procedures, including background checks.

  • Contributes to seasonal instructional and residential staff trainings and student orientations.

  • Serves in the on-call hierarchy evenings and weekends when programs are in session.

  • With senior team, responds to and helps resolve disciplinary, medical, or mental health crises that arise when programs are in session. Liaises with program staff and parents/guardians to support issue resolution.

  • Contributes to income and expense projections and informs Pre-College Programs budget. Manages academic expenses and authorizes payroll for pre-college program instructional staff. Works with the Director to project annual Summer Term Pre-College income and expenses.

  • Represents Summer Term Pre-College programs to external audiences. Organizes informational presentations in-person and online to prospective students and families; may attend tabling events.

Required Skills

About the Candidate:

  • Master's degree required, PhD preferred.

  • At least eight years of professional experience, with at least 3 years experience in secondary or higher education administration, with preference for experience in both areas.

  • Experience with curriculum development at the secondary and/or college level.

  • Experience in student management, residential education, or other customer-facing roles.

  • Professionalism, attention to detail, diplomacy, creativity, and enthusiasm.

  • Comfort with technology and data management; experience with Slate Technolutions desired but not required.

  • Some evening and weekend hours are necessary.
