Position Announcement

Join Utah Valley University's dynamic IT team as a Linux Systems Engineer, where you'll play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining the university's enterprise-grade Linux-based infrastructure. In this position, you'll manage system software, networking components, and hardware resources to ensure stability, security, and high performance across UVU's infrastructure and Kubernetes environment.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Engineer, design and develop information systems in the Linux environment systems to meet business requirements in accordance with best practices. Conduct analysis of business challenges and lead the evaluation, development, and recommendation of specific technology products and platforms to provide cost-effective solutions that meet the needs of the University and align with architectural standards. Create a well-informed technology strategy and manage the implementation process by overseeing the installation, configuration, and adoption. Contribute to overall University infrastructure strategy by proactively offering expertise and guidance. Manage cost-effective solutions to maximize value of products by providing detailed monthly reports as needed or required.
  • Update, maintain and support technical infrastructure that includes network, hardware, database and/or system software components within the Linux environment. Assist in configuration, debugging, and support for infrastructure and CI/CD pipeline. Ensure all quality and change control standards are met. Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans. Test and update recovery procedures to ensure rapid system restoration in case of a failure. Coordinate with system owners to ensure that patches for security vulnerabilities are applied in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate closely with IT Security to monitor, secure, and protect the University's data and systems. Assist with root cause investigations and provide recommendations for preventive measures, security policies, procedures, and protocols to safeguard information systems. Proactively address gaps in existing support processes, documentation, and prioritize efforts accordingly. Ensure efficient functioning of process functions in accordance with University security policies and industry best practices.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with an Bachelors degree in Information Technology or related field, plus three year of work experience administering and maintaining of enterprise level IT systems; OR an associate's degree in Information Technology or related field, plus five years of work experience in Information Technology, four of which must be directly related to the administering and maintaining enterprise level IT systems; OR any combination of higher education and work experience totaling seven years related to Information Technology, four of which must be directly related to the administering and maintaining of enterprise level IT systems. A passing completion of one current industry recognized certification that is directly related to the administering and maintaining enterprise level IT systems.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge

  • Excellent knowledge of Linux platforms, Kubernetes containerization and VMware virtualization.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standard methods and best practices in systems administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of server hardware, containerization, virtualization, operating systems, and systems services.
  • Strong knowledge of storage infrastructure, systems, and interfaces. Knowledge of multiple-tier application architecture.
  • Knowledge of security, backups, and disaster recovery. Knowledge of clustering, redundant systems, and high availability.
  • Strong knowledge of automation tools such as Python, Bash, and Ansible scripts.
  • Proficient knowledge of using VMware vCenter to manage Linux VMs.
  • Proficient knowledge of Kubernetes tools such as Containerd, Rancher, Kubectl, Kubeadm and Kustomize.
  • Knowledge with build tools like Ant, Maven, Gradle, GitLab, CI/CD.
  • Strong knowledge of networking, TCP/IP, and load balancing.
  • Knowledge of databases and various scripting languages for systems automation.
  • Knowledge of some basic security concepts, such as firewalls, etc.
Skills
  • Networking development and administration skills: such as TCP/IP, IP addresses, HTTP, and DNS.
  • Experience with operating systems including Linux, Unix, Solaris, Ubuntu, and/or Windows.
  • Experience with computer programming languages including Python, Perl, Java, and ASP.NET.
  • The use and implementation of tools and platforms including but not limited to Kubernetes and SQL/NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with provisioning automation and configuration management (Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Jenkins).
Abilities
