Job Description Summary
This position will serve both the San Luis Obispo and North County Campus and will require evening hours.
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, perform a variety of specialized technical library duties involving direct contact with students, staff, faculty, and community members; perform library work requiring basic to complex understanding of library principles, practices and procedures, and may assist within the different areas of Library and perform other related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Library Technician II class is distinguished from other classes in that incumbents are expected to assist in the overall operation of the District's Library. Incumbents independently apply basic to complex college library policies and procedures.
Incumbents in the Library Technician classes support Student Learning Outcomes by acquiring, processing, organizing resources, and assisting students to locate and use Library resources relevant to their collegiate assignments.

Essential Functions & Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
All library-classified staff are expected to perform the core functions, as needed. The primary assignment for a Library Technician II may be in the Circulation area and/or in one or more areas of Technical Services.
Any one position may not include all the essential functions listed, nor do all the listed essential functions include all tasks which may be found in the positions of the class.
Core Functions:
- Assist with the opening and closing of the library as directed; lock and unlock doors as directed; turn on and off lights, computers, copiers and other machinery; escort students out as needed;
- Use the Library Integrated Library System (ILS) to circulate library materials;
- Assist students, faculty and library patrons at the library circulation desk;
- Assist students and patrons in the selection, location and use of library materials and equipment; respond to inquiries and provide information;
- Shelve new and returned materials (books, media, textbooks or periodicals);
- Assist Library Technicians as needed;
- Inform Library users of rules of conduct as necessary and enforce those rules when appropriate;
- Operate a variety of office and library equipment including a calculator, copier, computer, assigned software and cash register;
- Maintain and troubleshoot copiers and printers; stock copiers with paper as needed;
- Perform basic mending and repair of library materials:
- Prepare and maintain statistical reports as required;
- Answers telephone and directs calls; and
- Perform other related duties as required.
Acquisitions:
- Order books, periodicals, and media requested by librarians for library collections from appropriate vendors;
- Track orders and communicate status of orders to faculty and staff;
- Receive incoming items in the Library ILS; and
- Process payments to vendors in the Library ILS.
Cataloging and Collections:
- Perform copy cataloging of print and electronic resources using the Library ILS according to MARC, LCC, RDA and other common library standards and local practice;
- Maintain local cataloging standards, policies and procedures; and
- Original cataloging, classification, and updating of legacy records under supervision of the Technical Services Librarian.
Reserves:
- Utilize the Library ILS to process new and/or added reserve materials with brief entry cataloging;
- Monitor required textbooks, class schedules, and correspond with faculty to ensure class reserves are accurate and available for students; and
- Monitor the circulation/reserve materials and recommend new reserve acquisitions.
Circulation
- Utilize the Library ILS to facilitate the circulation of library materials;
- Utilize the ILS to locate and retrieve books and materials; and
- Shelve books, periodicals, and shelf read using Library of Congress Classification System.
Interlibrary Loan
- Research, order, and process interlibrary loans.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
- Two years of college level coursework;
Preferred
- Certificate in Library Science preferred.
Experience:
Required
- Two years of recent library experience, preferably including experience working with students, faculty, and the public in a library setting;
- One year of general clerical experience may be substituted for one year of required library experience.
Knowledge of:
- Library terminology and standard library practices and techniques;
- Standard library classification, filing, and cataloging systems;
- General types and uses of library and audiovisual materials and equipment;
- Standard procedures for cataloging, processing and circulating library and audiovisual materials;
- Audiovisual equipment care and use;
- Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
- Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and
- District policies and procedures.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
- Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.
Physical ability to:
- Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
- Work at heights;
- Ascend and descend step stool;
- Reach in all directions;
- Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
- Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
- Lift and/or carry 25 pounds; and
- Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.
License and Certificates (current within the last year or must be continuously current):
Required
- Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire
Preferred
- Certificate in library science preferred.
