ABOUT THE POSITION

Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one Long Term Substitute DSPS Counselor Professor commencing with the Fall 2025 / Spring 2026 semester. This assignment also includes curriculum development, participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Trades, Technology and Community Learning campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, on-line or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Faculty positions offer the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. RESPONSIBLITIES

Apply DSPS policies and procedures, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, requirements pertaining to compliance with section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act for website accessibility and Electronic and information (EIT), Title 5 and California Education Code Regulations and federal and state law as related to access issues in a community college setting.
Determine eligibility for DSPS office through direct evaluation, by observation, or from careful review of documentation presented, as well as training in the proper use of various assessment techniques.
Evaluate functional limitations, skills and abilities of students in order to design and implement appropriate disability-related accommodations and recommend the use of appropriate assistive technology hardware and software.
Conduct intake, assessment, and determination of eligibility for DSPS services in compliance with Title 5, the ADA, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
Provide academic, career, and personal counseling and guidance services to students with disabilities both individually and in groups.
Assist students in determining appropriate academic adjustments and accommodations; consult with instructors regarding specific students and their disability related needs.
Design individualized educational plans and authorize educational accommodations for students with disabilities.
Develop effective working relationships with faculty members in instructional areas; serve as faculty liaison on issues related to students with disabilities to ensure compliance with Title V and the ADA; perform in service training related to disability and disability law to the college community.
Provide academic, career, and personal counseling and guidance services to students with disabilities both individually and in groups.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications items or the equivalent

1.Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling

OR

2. Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling,

OR

3. a Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling AND possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);
AND either fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, OR the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a postsecondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, OR two years of fulltime experience, in one or more of the following:

Counseling for students with disabilities; or
Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

All candidates must demonstrate

Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of and ability to apply DSPS policies and procedures, Title 5 and California Education Code Regulations, and federal and state laws related to access issues in a community college setting.
Strong working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amended, Rehabilitation Acts 504 and 508, Title V Regulations for Disabled Students Programs & Services.
Understanding of universal design principles and ability to collaborate with faculty and staff to promote accessible instructional practices.
Demonstrated experience providing academic and disability-related counseling to students in a higher education setting.
Ability to direct many projects and tasks concurrently, within multiple locations and manage time wisely.
Demonstrates cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:
Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate valid California Driver's License.
