Job Summary
The University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) is an autonomous unit within the Department of Geology and Geophysics that focuses on research, education, and outreach related to earthquakes and seismic hazard. UUSS operates a network of over 200 seismograph stations throughout Utah and the Yellowstone volcanic region for 24/7 monitoring and reporting of earthquakes. UUSS staff include research scientists, engineers, information specialists, computing experts, and a business manager. Partner agencies include the Utah Geological Survey, the Utah Division of Emergency Management, and the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Systems Administrator is a full-time, benefitted position within UUSS that manages the core software and hardware that support continuous seismic monitoring. Close collaboration with UUSS staff and external IT staff at the University of Utah is needed. Owing to the 24/7 nature of UUSS operations, essential services occasionally require the ability to troubleshoot remotely, or more infrequently on-site, outside of normal business hours. Candidates must be experienced with Linux (Ubuntu), networking (DNS, Cisco switches and firewalls), web-server management (Apache and nginx), and user authentication (LDAP). The ideal candidate will also have a working knowledge of networked file systems (CephFS and NetApp), secrets management (Vault), and orchestration management tools (Kubernetes).
Physical Requirements: The most common activities will be working on computers, sitting, typing, etc., though the position may periodically require bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling and lifting, or supervising another employee to lift up to 50 lbs.
Responsibilities
- Update and patch ~40 Linux servers- Manage both internal and external firewall rules- Work with College and Campus IT for network and user management- Install, repair, update, and remove hardware on server racks- Resolve staff connectivity issues- Perform inventory management- Renew TLS/SSL certificates- Monitor network traffic and system statuses (Nagios)- Perform periodic backups of critical systems/information- Write technical how-to documentation to a private wiki- 24 7 availability as needed
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) in area of specialty and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

- Excellent diagnostic and problem resolution skills- Effective communicator- Self-motivated to continually assess, improve, and automate processes- Experience with or willingness to learn Kubernetes, CephFS, Vault identity-based security, and monitoring containerized applications- Familiarity with automation tools like Chef/Puppet/Ansible- Familiarity with applying Wordpress updates- Experience with git version control- Database administration experience (PostgreSQL)- Familiarity with scripting and basic programming (Bash, Python, Java, Rust)- Knowledge of MacOS
