Director of Advancement, College of Health

Job Summary

The Director of Advancement for the College of Health (DOA-COH) directs all advancement, alumni relations and communication activities involved with the University of Utah College of Health and solicitation of donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies. This important and highly visible position will manage relationships with a portfolio of donors who have the capability of making major, principal gifts, and legacy gifts. This includes identifying, cultivating, negotiating, and stewarding gifts of various amounts including gifts of significant value. The DOA-COH will articulate and execute an advancement plan focused on best practices, including goals and metrics, and well-articulated philanthropic priorities, leading to the procurement of private support for the College of Health.
The DOA-COH will oversee donor and alumni programs that advance the mission of the College of Health. The DOA-COH will manage two team members responsible for Advancement and Alumni Relations. The DOA-COH will maintain and grow relationships with the Dean and staff of the College of Health, and collaborate with staff across University Advancement, Alumni Relations, administrators, faculty, and others to build and implement effective strategies and collaborative partnerships that will lead to benecial long-term relationships and signicant gift support.
The DOA-COH reports directly to the Principal Director, Health Academics and holds dual responsibility to University Advancement and the Dean of the College of Health.

    Responsibilities
    Responsibilities1. Oversees a team of advancement, alumni relations, and communications staff. Recruits, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates staff and volunteer staff.2. Directs strategy for advancement and oversees the implementation of plans for the College of Health. Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan.3. Develops strategy for communications and marketing and oversees the implementation of plans for the College of Health. Ensures policies and risk management are properly followed. Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan.4. Develops strategy for alumni relations program and implementation of plans for the College of Health. Ensures policies and risk management are properly followed. Evaluates the effectiveness of the program.5. Promote the vision, mission, goals, and core values of University Advancement and the College of Health.6. Identifies, cultivates, solicits, negotiates, and stewards donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities.7. Develop, manage and implement a solicitation strategy for a portfolio of 75 or more donor prospects capable of making gifts of $50,000 or above.8. Plans strategies, goals, and evaluates to increase fundraising, alumni relations, and communication effectiveness including; corporate gift-giving, capital campaigns, planned giving, annual giving, major gifts, grant acquisitions, partners in gratitude, special events, telemarketing, student philanthropy, volunteer programs, and all communication channels (print, electronic, broadcast, digital and social media).9. Submits an annual plan and budget that includes goals, objectives, and strategies for fundraising, alumni relations, and communications.10. Administers the departmental budget. May monitor the gift accounts including endowed and expendable funds to ensure that they are being managed in accordance with the donor's gift agreements.11. Prepares written proposals, information materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations, and other materials needed to secure gifts. Participates cooperatively in illustrations, and other materials needed to secure gifts. Participates cooperatively in University Advancement's prospect management and tracking system.12. Prepares and analyzes market research to aid in fundraising, alumni relations, and communications. 13. Meets with various College of Health department clinical, research, staff, and faculty members.14. In consultation with the Principal Director, Health Academics and Dean of the College of Health, submit an annual advancement work plan and budget that includes goals, objectives, strategies, anticipated travel, and metrics for fundraising and professional development and performance management goals. Participate in quarterly assessment of progress toward meeting short- and long-term goals.15. Develops long-term relationships with potential donors and volunteers. Responsible for cultivating prospects as potential donors to the departments or college.16. Ensures appropriate recognition of donors and volunteers.17. Oversees all aspects of special events as necessary.18. Identifies, organizes, and directs various boards and committees within the college.19. Tracks the solicitation progress and ensures that proper records are kept of each solicitation to avoid duplication of efforts or potentially jeopardize donor relationships.20. Serves as a member of the Dean's Advisory Council (DAC), giving insight to counsel regarding matters of development.21. Works cooperatively with University Advancement colleagues in Annual Giving, Planned Giving, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and Principal Gifts in preparing solicitation strategies for assigned prospects in a portfolio. Works collaboratively with U of U Alumni Association, U of U Communications and Marketing, and University Advancement Communications and Marketing.
    Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and be willing to travel when necessary.Frequent local travel expected.     Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience (One year of education is equivalent to two years of experience).
    • Six years of related experience.


    Preferences
    • Ideal candidates will have at least six years of experience with progressively more responsibility in higher education fundraising, with a strong preference for experience in academic medicine, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts.
    • Significant experience closing five and six-figure gifts.
    • Demonstrated increase in fundraising responsibilities and/or management experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate, and steward meaningful relationships with donors.
    • Management experience, demonstrated interpersonal skills, background knowledge of fundraising best practices, alumni relations, copywriting, editing, event planning, and interviewing/reporting experience are highly favored.
    • Experience in grant or proposal writing, public speaking, and a background working with print and/or electronic media.
    • Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of educational and social backgrounds and to demonstrate honest respect for each individual.
    • A broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning, implementation, and management.
    • This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
    • This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
    • Knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising and gift planning vehicles.
