Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President, Business and Administrative Services, the Executive Director of Sustainability and Energy Initiatives leads the strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of District-wide sustainability and utility management programs. This role is pivotal in shaping the District's environmental future by advancing initiatives that support energy and water conservation, zero waste, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction, and green building certifications. The position serves as a key liaison to the President's Office and external partners, while collaborating across academic, administrative, and community units to promote environmental stewardship and campus-wide engagement. This role also champions educational campaigns, facilitates interdepartmental collaboration, and drives continuous improvement through data-driven assessments, policy recommendations, and strategic change management. Through thoughtful leadership and cross-sector partnerships, the Executive Director of Sustainability and Energy Initiatives ensures the District remains a leader in sustainability, innovation, and operational efficiency.



Examples Of Essential Duties

  1. Develops, assesses, and updates the District's sustainability policies and plans for the built environment strategy, GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions reduction plan, energy and water conservation plans, zero waste plan, and green building certifications.
  2. Develops policies, plans, and proposals to meet the District's sustainability initiatives; evaluates District-wide sustainability management programs to ensure target goals are being met.
  3. Makes modifications to District sustainability and utility policies and procedures based on prevailing codes, feasibility, maintenance requirements, savings incentives, rebates, and cost-effectiveness.
  4. Analyzes utility information and identifies trends in usage and demand; develops projections of District utility resource needs and options for meeting current and future needs with cost- effectiveness.
  5. Conducts GHG emissions and resources inventory and performs analytical and reporting tasks related to the District's sustainable practices policy, sustainability plan, and carbon emissions analysis.
  6. Provides support, leadership, and guidance to District administration and community on methods to improve the District's environmental performance, through the implementation of educational campaigns and activities to promote environmental stewardship.
  7. Collaborates with the Facilities & Construction Services Department to ensure that future campus plans are in line with the District's sustainability goals; promotes green building standards on new construction and renovation projects.
  8. Serves as liaison to the President's Office regarding sustainable projects and annual reporting.
  9. Provides cost savings to the District by developing energy consumption and unit-cost reduction strategies and specifications; assesses utility usage and demands and adjusts strategies accordingly.
  10. Develops and sustains partnerships with outside agencies including the City of Pasadena, Pasadena Water & Power (PWP), local community organizations, and other educational institutions to collaborate on programs related to sustainability.
  11. Represents and serves as an Advisor for the District's interests at various committee and council meetings involving sustainability and utility related projects.
  12. Develops and implements success metrics to assess the progress and effectiveness of the district's sustainability initiatives.
  13. Leads and participates in planning groups related to Districtwide Waste Management, Water Conservation, Air Quality, Renewable Energy, Energy Conservation, Carbon Reduction, and Communications and Controls.
  14. Partners with all campus academic and administrative units, auxiliary organizations, and student groups to develop sustainability project/plan initiatives
  15. Creates, organizes, and maintains various data information systems so that information is current, accurate and accessible.
  16. Leads operational and management initiatives to modernize business operations, budget reduction, and increase efficiency of the operation.
  17. Facilitate the change management process for assigned strategic initiatives which includes researching, overseeing, planning, developing buy-in, implementing, communicating, evaluating, and monitoring.
  18. Reviews plans submitted by commissioned architects for conformance to sustainability and energy goals and specifications of the District.
  19. Develops and maintains a clearinghouse of best practice case studies, guidelines, financial incentives, project support services, and other resources to support campus sustainability projects.
  20. Creates and maintains campus databases for resource use, waste, and materials management.
  21. Research best practices and makes recommendations for implementation to the Executive Team on strategic initiatives related to customer service, budget, operations, management information, and communications.
  22. Directs the preparation of the approved specifications and plans for contracts related to energy development.
  23. Directly manages all aspects of employee lifecycle including recruitment, transfers, suspensions, layoffs, recalls, promotions, terminations, task assignments, performance evaluations, rewards, disciplinary actions, and grievance resolution, ensuring adherence to company policies and legal requirements.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned.





EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:
  • A bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Energy Management, Public Policy, or a related field.
  • Four years of professional-level experience in sustainability management including assessment of transportation methods, green building, and recycling and resource opportunities.
    • Including two years of supervisory or program administration experience.


Experience and/or education of the same kind, level, and amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Green Building (LEED) certification, Certified Energy Manager credential, International Facility Management Association Sustainability Facility Management certification or other related certifications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills and abilities commonly associated with this position.
  • Expert understanding of sustainable practices and policies, including greenhouse gas emissions reduction, energy and water conservation, zero waste initiatives, and green building certifications.
  • Ability to develop, assess, and update comprehensive sustainability policies and strategies for a large district or organization.
  • Knowledge of the operational, administrative, and educational structures within California public school districts and community colleges.
  • Proficiency in analyzing utility usage and demands, identifying trends, and developing effective resource management projections and strategies.
  • Capability to provide cost savings through development of energy consumption reduction strategies and efficient utility usage assessments.
  • Working knowledge of sustainability management and best practices, carbon tracking, and other sustainability metrics.
  • Working knowledge of laws and administrative policies, practices, and processes of local, state, and federal agencies pertaining to environmental issues.
  • Strong ability to develop and sustain partnerships with external agencies, local community organizations, and educational institutions to enhance sustainability efforts.
  • Skills in providing support, leadership, and guidance to improve environmental performance through educational campaigns and activities.
  • Ability to effectively represent and advise on the district's sustainability interests at various committees and council meetings.
  • Competence in working with facilities and construction departments to align future plans with sustainability goals and promote green building standards.
  • Proficiency in creating, organizing, and maintaining data information systems to ensure information is current, accurate, and accessible.
