Academic Advisor I

Job Summary

The College of Architecture + Planning cares deeply for the success of all students and seeks an academic advisor that is sensitive to the needs of diverse students to manage their assigned caseload of students in the Games program, develop support services, collaborate with departments and faculty to prepare students for the undergraduate majors, and provide academic advising for the undergraduate population.



Responsibilities
  1. Meets with undergraduate students in caseload (approximately 250-330) to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, major exploration, course planning and registration, transfer credit evaluation/substitution or advanced degree requirements.
  2. Facilitates students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.
  3. Meets with Chair and/or designee (faculty leaders) in the Division of Games to communicate, share information, and collaborate to devise creative solutions to best support the experience, success, retention and graduation of undergraduate students.
  4. Actively engages in campus-based professional development communities, including but not limited to "UAAC or other relevant campus-based organizations that advances direct skills in academic advising."
  5. Develops and presents education programs designed to supplement or enhance academic preparedness.
  6. Collects and disseminates information to students, faculty and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
  7. Coordinates and/or participates in the advising-related portion of new/transfer student and parent orientation sessions.
  8. Coordinates and/or participates in outreach activities with two-year institutions within Utah; specifically with Salt Lake Community College as we have an articulation agreement with their architecture program.
  9. Ensures processes and procedures are followed to facilitate the entry of transfer students into college programs.
  10. Provide assistance in the recruitment process and activities to support prospective students as they navigate the admissions application process.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned when necessary.





Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.



Preferences
Previous academic advising experience or related student support services experience.
