Position Description
The Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability is a campus-wide, interdisciplinary Center that seeks to inspire and prepare the next generation of leaders and professionals to meet the unprecedented ethical challenge facing us all in the early 21st century: forging a sustainable relationship between humankind and planet Earth and doing so in ways that foster justice within and between societies. CEJS seeks to educate and develop leaders for a more just and sustainable world by:
- Engaging students in experiential learning through environmental justice and sustainability projects at Seattle U, in the greater Seattle area, and around the world
- Advancing sustainability literacy and research
- Sponsoring events, conferences, and workshops that engage students and employees with the community and advance public policy
- Promoting Seattle University's climate action and sustainability performance in all areas of our campus, from Academics and Engagement to Operations and Investments
Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability (CEJS), the Sustainability Coordinator (SC) is responsible for the daily coordination of the CEJS, including sustainability promotion, communication, education, engagement, event programming, and project implementation across Seattle University (SU) and in collaboration with higher education and local community partners. The SC will support in doing research, collecting data, identifying sustainability opportunities, and implementing and tracking progress of Seattle University's Sustainability "Laudato Si'" Action Plan goals with the intention to infuse sustainability values and practices across campus programs and operations. This opportunity is a non-exempt, full-time position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATION AND IMPLEMENTATION:
- Support the university's sustainability commitment and committee (Laudato Si' Action Platform and LSAP Executive Committee) with information, research and data on institutional best practices and recommendations for sustainability solutions and strategies
- Work with the CEJS Director on identifying and advocating for sustainability improvements in all facets of the University (Operations, Academics, Engagement, Planning and Administration)
- Assist with the development, implementation and tracking of sustainability-related projects and resources that are aligned with institutional strategies and long-term goals
- Assist with data collection for the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) report through the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)
- Support with SU's annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory compilation and collection of GHG data from across campus departments
- Conduct campus-wide surveys with campus partners and perform response analysis and reporting
- Support with grant proposal development efforts in collaboration with the CEJS Director and other campus stakeholders
COMMUNICATION, MARKETING, EDUCATION, and ENGAGEMENT:
- Enhance sustainability communication and outreach to the SU community and external audiences by managing the CEJS website, quarterly CEJS newsletters, weekly Sustainability updates via ConnectSU, campus announcements, and social media posts
- Oversee the development of communication materials (e.g. infographics; graphic designs;), displays, signage, etc. to inform the campus and external community of sustainability-related topics and practices.
- Coordinate, deliver, and evaluate sustainability-related learning opportunities, such as classroom presentations, orientations, workshops, and professional development opportunities
- Work with the CEJS Director and student workers to develop annual event programming (e.g. Earth Month events, Race to Zero Waste competition events,). Coordinate event logistics (space, catering, registration, marketing and communication,)
- Foster partnerships with Seattle University faculty and staff, campus offices, and students and student clubs to identify and collaborate on sustainability-related initiatives; facilitate campus-based sustainability engagement; and gather programmatic advice
- Collaborate with other higher education institutions and with local, regional, and international organizations on sustainability-related initiatives pertinent to SU
CEJS PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND ADMINISTRATION:
- Support with recruitment and training of CEJS student workers
- Administer and coordinate the annual CEJS student and faculty fellowship program (application and selection process; payments; quarterly reporting;) and coordinate the annual CEJS SUGives campaign to raise funds for the fellowships.
- Keep CEJS office maintained and supplied; answer phones and greet guests; respond to email requests form SU community and external partners; maintain CEJS contact database
- Track and process all Center-related expenses, reimbursements and budget transfers
- Develop documentation processes for the Center's activities and practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Established interest and experience researching, identifying, developing, managing, tracking, and evaluating sustainability initiatives and projects
- Experience conducting community outreach, advocacy, and engagement related to sustainability, environmental justice, and/or climate change solutions
- Proven ability to communicate strategically and convey sustainability topics, research and data to a wider audience through a variety of media
- A skilled collaborator with effective interpersonal skills to coordinate partnerships and projects across an organization
- Excellent written and oral communication and presentation/public speaking skills
- Proven leadership abilities and experience developing and completing projects start-to-finish
- Experience in event coordination, volunteer recruitment
- Experience in data collection and analysis
- Experience in website and social media content management and creation of graphics in tools such as Canva
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently
- Advanced literacy in Excel
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion at higher-education institutions
- Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with and mentoring students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
- OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
IDEAL QULAIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in a sustainability-related field
- Familiarity with the Association of the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) - Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Reporting System (STARS) reporting framework
- Prior experience with greenhouse gas emissions accounting
- Extensive knowledge of holistic sustainability frameworks concepts, topics, and solutions.

Compensation at a Glance
Salary Range: $50,100 - $53,000
Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.
