Position Description
Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor and Honors Faculty Fellow. The main responsibility of the Honors Faculty Fellow involves teaching a rigorous two-semester interdisciplinary seminar, The Human Event. In this seminar series, students examine primary materials that reflect a breadth of intellectual traditions from earliest writings to the present. This discussion-based class requires students' active participation and focuses on developing their skills in critical thinking and argumentative writing. Faculty are encouraged to lead discussions and mentor students in innovative ways that enrich their honors experience. Faculty have opportunities to teach upper-level special topic courses in their areas of expertise and/or intellectual interest, and to mentor students in innovative ways that enrich their honors experience, including leading international and domestic travel programs and guiding independent studies, research and collaborative projects. They also have access to a strong peer mentoring program to help develop their teaching and professional skills.

Incoming Barrett students have an average unweighted GPA of 3.81 and are often in the top ten percent of their high school classes. Barrett operates at four physical ASU campuses throughout the greater Phoenix area and has a growing presence with ASU Online.
We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position at the Tempe campus. The primary responsibility will be to teach multiple sections of the first-year Human Event seminar. The workload is 100% in-person teaching, with a standard teaching load of 4-4, typically with one course preparation per semester. As a multidisciplinary faculty, we welcome applications from candidates with training in any academic field with an enthusiasm for interdisciplinarity. The position begins January 2026 with a nine-month salary based on education and experience.
Required Qualifications:
- A PhD, in hand by August, 2025. (Note: Other terminal degrees (e.g., MFA, JD, etc.) are not acceptable for this position.)
- Demonstrated record of teaching excellence
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive pedagogy and an ability to engage and mentor a high-potential student body
- Academic expertise in Asian or Southeast Asian literature and/or religious studies
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience teaching argumentative writing
- Experience in leading dynamic, discussion-based classes
- Experience in incorporating interdisciplinary approaches
- Experience in developing study abroad or domestic travel programming
- Demonstrated preparation for mentoring students in undergraduate research and independent projects
- Demonstrated preparation for mentoring students in a variety of curricular and extracurricular activities
