Job Summary
Lifelong Learning connects the University of Utah to adult learners (18+) across the state through in-person and online classes that promote personal exploration, growth, and community engagement. We program approximately 500 adult enrichment classes a year, spanning visual and performing arts, current events, recreation, wellness and relationships, literature, and so much more. We celebrate our community and foster campus connections and belonging for anyone who wants to learn. The Lifelong Learning Director oversees the staff, budget, and curriculum decisions associated with the program's day-to-day operations. This includes tasks associated with managing, researching, developing, implementing, and evaluating classes. Building and stewarding relationships with instructors, students, and community partners is an important aspect of this job.
We anticipate hosting first round interviews from August 18-29 on Zoom. Second round interviews will be in person. We anticipate a start date of October 1. The hiring committee is led by Christine Baczek, Senior Director of Personal Enrichment Programs.
Responsibilities
- Ensures day-to-day operations work efficiently and effectively, including student registration, programming, instructor communication and pay, catalog deadlines, and web updates.
- Supervises the Lifelong Learning team, including hiring, training, goal-setting, and performance evaluation.
- Available for evening (Monday-Thursday) and Saturday classes as needed to support classes and build relationships with instructors, students, and community partners.
- Meets with Lifelong Learning team, instructors, and possibly students to conduct needs assessments, design curricula, determine delivery methods, and inform on- and off-campus organizations about Lifelong Learning's offerings.
- Coordinates with Senior Director of Personal Enrichment Programs to develop non-credit adult enrichment programs, identify the unit's strategic direction, and develop an effective business plan.
- Cultivates effective working partnerships with a wide variety of on- and off-campus entities, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations.
- Negotiates teaching contract price and terms.
- Researches and identifies potential course subject matter, and in consultation with Lifelong Learning team, the Senior Director of Personal Enrichment Programs, and Marketing assesses their marketability for identified clientele.
- Evaluates courses and instructors. Delivers feedback and suggestions for improvement.
- Works with the Programmer on strategy and course offering decisions, including instructor recruitment, building relationships with community partners, making data-driven decisions, etc.
- Works closely with the Marketing team to promote classes, build strategic campaigns, and publish printed catalogs. Represents the program across all channels and platforms, including but not limited to on air television appearances, community engagement events, etc.
- Forecasts revenue and costs for the program and individual classes in consultation with the financial team; develops and follows a unit budget.
- Sets standards for excellent customer service (Lifelong Learning serves approximately 2500+ students annually).
- Coordinates across departments to ensure that courses are set up properly, students are registered appropriately, classrooms are assigned, and instructors are paid.
- Collaborates closely with other programming units (especially the personal enrichment programs).
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required. Master's degree in Business Administration or related area preferred. This position is not responsible for providing patient care. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

- Ability to build strong relationships with a broad range of different people and organizations throughout the community
- Masters Degree in Higher Education Administration, Public Administration, Organizational Leadership, or another related field
- Experience with Zoom, Salesforce, Wrike, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Peoplesoft and/or ability to learn new software easily.

Work Schedule Summary: A flexible schedule is important. Classes take place on weekday evenings and on Saturdays and this position is expected to build relationships with instructors, students, and other members of the community, especially while classes are in session. The anticipated schedule is Monday through Thursday, 10:00 am-7:00 pm, Fridays 8:00 am-5:00 pm, and occasional Saturdays.
