Job Summary
The Department of Psychiatry at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) seeks a Clinical Research Manger whose responsibilities include developing and facilitating the overall process for clinical trials and facilitating post-award processes for assigned awards. This position is a key team member with an opportunity to significantly influence and build research administration operations and processes at HMHI.
Clinically-focused responsibilities include: Planning, organizing, directing and/or controlling aspects pertaining to clinical research functions of the Institute including, but not limited to, study-budget development, analysis, and negotiation, contract review and negotiation, compliance, and clinical trials infrastructure development and oversight. This position will not oversee individual clinical trials but is responsible for providing and managing effective support and alignment with key resources for the entire clinical trial portfolio. The incumbent will act as a catalyst between the Institute and its customers and staff to ensure continuity and quality of service and care and increase the clinical trial portfolio.
Post-award responsibilities include: Facilitate post-award grant processes; coordinate cross-departmentally to research, prepare, finalize, and submit progress and financial reports, and follow-up on grants; maintain records and communicates with funders; review contracts/awards; support set-up and close-out; support compliance; prepare budget and contract amendments; facilitate contracts associated with grants; and support faculty in other areas of post-award as needed to reduce administrative burden.
Responsibilities
- Oversees the pre- and post-award grant processes for clinically focused research projects, which includes the development and compliance of clinical trials.
- Oversees the post-award processes for assigned grants (e.g., sub recipient monitoring, expenditure tracking, carry forward and no cost extension requests, etc.).
- Develops and implements procedures in research administration that are consistent with the University of Utah's policies.
- Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships.
- Ensures customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions, and providing appropriate follow-through.
- Ensures competency of staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through on going staff performance evaluations.
- Builds and maintains relationships with sponsors, investigators, and research staff.
- Leads or supports research staff in clinical trial negotiation and management.
- Develops structures and pathways for effective clinical trial operations in HMHI and their partners.
- May include supporting the preparation of study-related documentation such as protocol worksheets, procedural manuals, adverse event reports, institutional review board documents, and progress reports.
- Ensures that required records and compliance documentation for protocols, regulations, and overall clinical objectives are maintained.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.
