PS Nurse Practitioner-Huntsman Acute Care Clinic
Job Summary
This position provides primary care and treatment to a group of patients in a clinic or hospital unit. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.
Patient Population: Cancer patients with acute medical issues from a 5+ state referral area.
This is a unique job opportunity to work in the only Commission on Cancer, National Cancer Institute designated and National Cancer Center Network center in the Intermountain West. The Huntsman Cancer Hospital Acute Care Clinic was conceived as an innovative way to keep cancer patients out of emergency rooms and urgent care clinics. Located within the cancer center, patients are referred, typically the same day, for a diverse array of acute medical issues such as acute hypoxic respiratory failure, sepsis, chest pain, DVT/pulmonary emboli, acute abdominal pain, uncontrolled pain, and nausea/vomiting. Patients are also referred for uncontrolled chronic medical issues such as hypertension and diabetes. These patients are evaluated independently by MDs or advanced practice clinicians in a top of license model. The mix of providers offers opportunities for teaching, supervision, and ensures availability for assistance with cases.
The unique patient population is a pleasure to work with given their level of physical, mental, and emotional needs. This leads to developing close relationships and sustained job satisfaction while working with a close-knit team. The work is incredibly intellectually rewarding due to the diversity of the pathologic conditions seen.
Referral Method: Patients referred by Medical Oncology, Hematology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Neuro-Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Surgical Oncology services. Acutely ill patients are triaged by their primary oncology team and referred to the Huntsman Acute Care Clinic for evaluation. This is not a walk-in service.
Type of Service: Internal Medicine based service.
Level of Acuity: High acuity patients ranging from medium to high acuity internal medicine on the order of hospitalist service/Acute Care inpatient/ Emergency Room &/or Intensive Care Unit acuity. With centralized monitoring similar to an ED/ICU.
