Job Summary

Under the leadership of the Director, the Associate Director for International Student Experience and Engagement is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating programs that support the successful acclimation and holistic experience of international students at the University of Utah. This role focuses on enhancing student engagement through a range of educational, social, and leadership development initiatives, including training programs, cultural events, and community service opportunities.
The Associate Director oversees the administration of sponsored and special programs, including Fulbright administration within the International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) Office, and provides strategic direction and supervision for the International Ambassador Program. Additionally, they supervise the Student Experience & Engagement Coordinator and oversee the front desk operations, including the management of Peer Assistants.
Working in close collaboration with the Director, the Associate Director plays a key role in aligning student engagement efforts with immigration advising practices and broader university academic advising policies. As a visible advocate for international students, the Associate Director serves as a liaison to campus partners and external stakeholders, including foreign embassies, to ensure comprehensive student support and program success.

Responsibilities
  • Support initiatives aimed at promoting international student retention and overall success.
  • Assist with immigration advising, student programming, and advocacy to enhance the international student experience.
  • Coordinate mentorship and advocacy efforts by analyzing data to inform programming and engagement strategies.
  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for F-1 and J-1 visa programs, ensuring full compliance with SEVIS and federal regulations.
  • Contribute to the operational needs of the International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) Office by supporting process improvements and daily functions.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for front office operations, including customer service delivery and supervision of Peer Assistants (hiring, training, and scheduling).
  • Identify and implement continuous improvements to enhance office strategies, methodologies, and tools.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops and educational programs that support international student transition, retention, and academic success.
  • Maintain and update content for the ISSS website, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and relevance.
  • Serve on departmental committees and participate in projects that advance the ISSS mission.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support integrated student services.
  • Co-lead signature ISSS programs, including International Student Orientation, monthly cultural engagement events, and International Education Week.
  • Provide oversight for sponsored and special programs (e.g., Fulbright), including program development, advising, compliance, sponsor communication, and daily operations.
  • Supervise the Orientation Coordinator in executing orientation programs and meeting programmatic goals.
  • Address complex immigration-related issues, crises, and student concerns with cultural sensitivity and awareness of language barriers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director to support office goals and student success.


Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required. Master's degree in Business Administration or related area preferred. This position is not responsible for providing patient care. Preferences
  • Experience in international education settings such as a university International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) office, language institute, or Global Engagement office, particularly within a higher education context.
  • Master's degree in international education, higher education administration, student affairs, intercultural communication, or a closely related field. an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain collaborative and culturally competent relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders, including sponsors and government agencies.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including international students and campus partners.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage multiple responsibilities and shifting priorities in a dynamic, student-centered environment.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to inclusive and equitable practices in international student support services
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, in compliance with USCIS eligibility requirements for Designated School Officials (DSOs).
  • Proven ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply complex regulatory information, particularly USCIS and SEVIS guidelines related to international student immigration status.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in navigating nuanced or high-stakes situations.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills with a demonstrated ability to work effectively in multicultural and international settings.
  • At least one year of supervisory or management experience.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Capable of managing multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with attention to detail and flexibility.
