Grant Writer

Job Summary

The Division of Epidemiology within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah seeks a highly motivated, self-starting, and detail-oriented Grant Writer to join its staff. The Grant Writer will be housed within the Program for Addiction Research, Clinical Care, Knowledge and Advocacy (PARCKA) https://medicine.utah.edu/internal-medicine/epidemiology/parcka.

The Grant Writer will support faculty and researchers in securing external funding from federal agencies, foundations, and other grant-making organizations. The Grant Writer will be responsible for researching funding opportunities, developing compelling proposals, and ensuring the timely and accurate submission of grant applications. This position will report to the Director of Research at PARCKA and will play a critical role in advancing our research mission. 

Responsibilities
Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and administrators to pro-actively identify funding opportunities aligned with academic research areas.
  • Write and edit clear, compelling, and technically accurate proposals, letters of intent, narratives, and supporting documents for grant submissions.
  • Coordinate the grant application process, including pre-submission peer reviews proposal drafts, timelines, and submission requirements.
  • Assist with post-award reporting and communications to funding agencies as needed.
  • Maintain a calendar of grant deadlines, submissions, and reporting requirements.
  • Stay up to date on trends and best practices in grant writing, academic funding, and compliance.
  • Support faculty with grant writing workshops or training sessions, as needed.
  • Develop templates and maintain a library of successful proposals and standard language for common information (e.g., facilities, mission, etc.).
  • May interact with political and corporate partners related to research initiatives.
  • Spearheads strategic research initiatives by acting as a key partner with initiative directors to form strategic direction and guide initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree or Bachelor's degree + four years of related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Preferences
Preference will be given to those who:

  • Master's Degree or Bachelor's degree + four years of related experience or 12 years of related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • Have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in grant writing, preferably in an academic or nonprofit environment.
  • Demonstrated success in securing grant funding from government agencies or foundations.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and research skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of federal and foundation funding mechanisms (e.g., NIH, NSF, DOE, NEH, private foundations).
