Job Summary
The Student Success Hub provides a collaborative structure for advisors to support students across multiple programs, a commitment to ongoing professional development, and a supportive leadership team dedicated to professional advising and student success.
This candidate will advise a large population of Psychology students on the Main Campus and transitioning from the Asia Campus regarding their academic planning and progress by utilizing professional advising and guidance skills. They will also support advising services for several departments in the College of Social & Behavioral Science (Family & Consumer Studies and Sociology & Criminology) and the School for Cultural & Social Transformation (Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, Disability Studies, and Pacific Islands Studies) through the Student Success Hub's collaborative advising model. Utilizes professional advising and guidance skills to assess individualized needs of students and provides appropriate advice related to academic planning and progress leading to graduation.
This position will assist the University in promoting a climate of respect that cultivates and sustains transformative practices by forging spaces of possibility where people feel valued and welcomed, respecting all students in their quests for individual success through degree programs, certificates, majors, etc.
Responsibilities
- Meets with students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, major exploration, course planning and registration, transfer credit evaluation/substitution or advanced degree requirements.
- Facilitates students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.
- Actively engages in campus-based professional development communities, including but not limited to "UAAC or other relevant campus-based organizations that advances direct skills in academic advising."
- Uses enterprise-level data analytics and student record technology platforms to monitor student progress and guide proactive student interventions.
- Maintains students' academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit.
- Develops and presents education programs designed to supplement or enhance academic preparedness.
- Collects and disseminates information to students, faculty and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
- Coordinates and/or participates in the advising-related portion of new/transfer student and parent orientation sessions.
- Serves on University committees.
- Participates in local and national professional associations.
- May participate in search committees for new hires in department, including both staff and faculty roles.
- Supports the Student Success Hub in appropriate outreach events and activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
- Two years of direct academic advising experience
- Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
