Position Overview:
Painter I
This position maintains and improves facilities throughout campus by preparing and painting interior and exterior building components, furniture and floors.

This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or university closure.

Duties may include:
  • Patch, clean and prepare all wall surface types
  • Prepare work site to protect surrounding surfaces
  • Mud and tape sheetrock in new construction, repairs and renovations
  • Match, mix, blend and apply paint and stain to a variety of surfaces
  • Clean work site and remove debris, properly disposing of chemicals
  • Remove broken glass and determine correct replacement glass based on building safety codes
  • Remove and repair window screens and aluminum, wood and vinyl window frames
  • Install replacement glass and specialty glass
  • Order and maintain a varied glass inventory
  • Other duties as assigned

Painter II
This position maintains and improves facilities throughout campus by independently performing journeyman-level preparation and painting of interior and exterior building components, furniture and floors.

This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or university closure.

Duties may include:
  • Patch, clean and prepare all wall surface types
  • Determine appropriate application method for surfaces to be covered
  • Match, mix, blend and apply paint and stain to a variety of surfaces
  • Remove broken glass and determine correct replacement glass based on building safety codes
  • Remove and repair window screens and aluminum, wood and vinyl window frames
  • Install replacement glass and specialty glass
  • Order and maintain a varied glass inventory
  • Meet with customers to define job to be completed; determine the effect the work will have on building users and discuss strategies to avoid disruption
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:
Painter I
  • Using paints and stains in various applications
  • Preparing surfaces and applying painting products

Painter II
  • Two years as a journeyman-level painter, including determining suitable paint and stain products to use in various applications; preparing and finishing drywall and plaster surfaces; and applying painting products
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and specifications

Required Education:
Painter I and II
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Required Other:
Painter I and II
  • Possess a valid drivers license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Participate in a medical surveillance program and be fit-tested for respirator
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to respond to emergency calls within one hour and serve on weekend call-out duty on a regular rotation

Additional Preferred:
Painter I
  • Experience working professionally with:
    • Equipment, materials and techniques used to apply paint, stain, varnish and similar products using industry best practices
    • Using and maintaining tools and equipment associated with painting; mixing, matching and color coordinating paints and stains
  • Certification as a Lead-based Paint Professional
  • Knowledge of and experience performing glazier work

Painter II
  • Certification as a Lead-based Paint Professional
  • Knowledge of and experience performing glazier work

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Painter I and II
Must be able to:
  • Bend, stoop and work in awkward positions for several hours at a time
  • Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and scissor lifts
  • Carry, lift or otherwise move items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing duties
