Job Description
The successful candidate for this new position will report to the University Ombuds. The Office is also staffed by the Associate Ombuds and a part-time administrative assistant.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provide confidential conflict managment and coaching by helping inquirers to:
- consider their concerns, needs, and goals as well as those of other stakeholders
- clarify issues and generate options for managing problems and conflicts
- access university policies and resources
- develop skills in effective communication and difficult conversations
- Provide informal mediation, dialogue facilitation, and shuttle diplomacy
- Assist individuals, groups, and departments in developing collaborative strategies for managing conflict and addressing complaints
- Stay informed of and provide referrals to other BU resources as needed
- Gather, assess, and provide information as part of collaborative problem-solving strategies
- Serve as a resource for the review, formulation, or modification of policies and practices
- Respond to individuals in timely way; treat all individuals with dignity and respect
- Work collaboratively and effectively with ombuds office staff; help foster a respectful and productive workplace climate
- Demonstrate commitment and sensitivity to matters of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
- Ensure the integrity of the Office of the Ombuds and adhere to ombuds principles of confidentiality, independence, neutrality, and informality
- Provide outreach and communication about the Office of the Ombuds and its role at BU
- Review patterns of concerns; identify problems, policies, or procedures that appear to
- be systemic, or the source of recurring grievances
- pose a financial, reputational, ethical, or other risk to the university
- present a meaningful concern for the university community
Required Skills
Required:
- Advanced degree
- Excellent listening & creative problem-solving skills
- Minimum of 5 years successful relevant experience in conflict management, mediation, collaborative problem solving, negotiation, ombuds-related work, or a related field
- Ability to
- Maintain discretion and confidentiality
- Demonstrate integrity
- Exercise exceptional professional judgment while working with highly sensitive, complex, and often nuanced issues
- Assess complex systemic issues and organizational cultures & dynamics
- Work both independently and as part of a larger organization
- Work successfully with individuals at all levels of an organization and with diverse populations
Desired, not required:
- Successful experience in ombuds role
- Basic mediation training or equivalent
- Excellent facilitation skills
- Experience working in higher education or a medical education environment or in organizational development
