We are searching for an experienced Assistant Professor, Counselor at our Santa Maria Campus facility.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, COUNSELOR
This is a full-time, 175-day (10-month annual contract) tenure-track faculty position in the Counseling department, with an emphasis in Career Counseling. The faculty member, will take leadership in all career counseling related activities which include orientation, assessment, and educational planning, provide academic, occupational, and personal guidance and counseling for prospective, new and continuing students; participate in curriculum development; act as a liaison with feeder high schools; provide job market and career information to individuals and groups; plan and refer students who require special college or community services; act as consultant to faculty regarding student performance and retention; participate in outreach activities; participate on departmental and other committees for policy development including the evaluation of the effectiveness of student equity within counseling related services, identifying organizational goals and objectives, interact with a diverse student, staff, and faculty population and demonstrate experience in the use of cross-cultural counseling skills, initiate and execute programming and projects based upon the changing needs of students and college community, and perform other duties as assigned. The assignment may include counseling on evenings and weekends.
BEGINNING DATE
August 2019, pending board approval.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Hiring salary range is $54,736 to $78,079 depending uponeducation and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,500 is paid annually.
Benefits include medical, dental, life, vision (employee only), and salary protection insurance.
Required Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE
The governing board seeks an individual with the following minimum qualifications:
1. Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage family and child counseling, OR the equivalent per Board Policy 7211. (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
2. Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and community college students and of staff and students with disabilities.
3. Demonstrated ability to:
Provide academic, career, and personal counseling as well as crisis intervention services
Review and evaluate counseling needs and formulate recommendations as appropriate
Work with and assist students having a broad range of skills, motivation, and academic or career technical education goals
Use computer technology as a tool, a student tracking system, a communication network with counseling and articulation activities
Plan, envision, and organize programs to enhance student success
Provide multicultural counseling principles, techniques and procedures
Initiate, execute and follow up on projects, including the ability to set specific objectives and measure achieved results
Communicate effectively, both in oral and written communications
Provide innovative leadership in areas of student equity
Commit as a team player, including the ability to engage in win-win thinking and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
Understand the diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities
Apply evaluation and assessment methods
Identify and use learning outcomes and assessment that lead to course and program improvements
4. Demonstrated Knowledge of:
UC/CSU transfer policies and practices
Community college assessment procedures and techniques
Job market and career trends and requirements

A committee will review applications. Meeting minimum qualifications does not ensure a candidate an interview. Therefore, it is important that the application be thorough and detailed. A limited number of applicants will be invited for an interview at the college at their own expense. All interviewed candidates will be asked to present a counseling role play demonstration.
