The Office of Student Engagement, Leadership, and Success is dedicated to empowering students to achieve success by actively participating in co-curricular engagement, leadership development initiatives, and various campus-wide events, initiatives, and programs. Acknowledging the positive impact of student involvement on academic performance, persistence, and an increased sense of belonging. The office strives to engage our diverse student population through intentional and transformative culturally relevant programs, services, and events. Student Engagement, Leadership, and Success are strong advocates for students and desire to equip them with co-curricular experiences that encourage self-discovery as part of their student journey and prepare them for life after college.


Administrative Coordination and Programs Management
  • Lead the work of the Student Engagement, Leadership, and Success coordinators with oversight of leadership development, fraternity and sorority life, and campus program. Lead the work of a graduate assistant. Provide strategic thinking towards goal setting, program design, implementation of programs and services, assessment planning and deployment, and input on performance evaluations for program coordinators.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of SELS undergraduate and graduate assistants in collaboration with program coordinators. Support student crises, counsel and advise students on interpersonal, academic, career interests, and identity development concerns. Refer and connect students to appropriate services for additional guidance, support, or intervention as needed.
  • Knowledge and interpretation of State, University, Division, and departmental policies, executive orders, procedures, and the impact on programming and services. Maintain knowledge of ASI policies and procedures as they relate to clubs and organizations and co-sponsorship of events, programming, training, etc... Interprets these regulations to students, faculty, and staff and assists them in program design, planning, and implementation as needed.
  • Monitor risk management issues and maintain a working relationship with the appropriate campus departments, including but not limited to Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, and University Police Department.
  • Assists the Director with strategic planning and end-of-year reporting for SELS.
  • Serve as a campus protest monitor and maintain knowledge of policies, procedures, and executive orders pertaining to protest monitoring and free speech. Provide ongoing training with staff and undergraduate and graduate assistants as needed.
  • Serve as a contributing member to departmental and campus-wide committees, programs, and initiatives that align with the mission of the Office of Student Engagement, Leadership, and Success.
  • Attends, presents, and participates in all staff meetings, retreats, and training for SELS, the Student Experience cluster, and the Division of Student Affairs as assigned.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations that align with the department.

Programs and Services Development
  • In collaboration and with the guidance of the SELS director, develop internal and external reach and scope of the department's services and programs to support student retention and persistence to reduce the achievement gap and increase graduation rates of CPP students.
  • Network and collaborate with campus departments and student organizations to develop, design, and deliver programs that facilitate interaction, synergy, and dialogue with the campus community focused on creating an anti-racist, culturally relevant, identity-centered, and caring environment that cultivates student success.
  • Provide and/or engage in programs, activities, and forums that outreach to Cal Poly Pomona faculty, staff, and students, as well as the surrounding community, that provide understanding, awareness, and support of leadership education and co-curricular activities.
  • Responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Bronco LEAD Program and the creation, coordination, and implementation of new leadership program development to support the transition, support during their college experience and beyond. This includes annual leadership networking events, leadership conferences, and award/recognition ceremonies.
  • Responsible for developing leadership development curricula that focus on providing emerging and established student leaders with opportunities to gain personal, organizational, and career readiness skills to effectively assume and fulfill leadership roles on campus, in the community, and post-graduation.
  • Develop new and innovative campus-wide leadership programs.
  • Assist SELS in developing co-curricular pathways to assist in students' success, academic progress, milestones, and career readiness.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to develop and maintain student success support services and programs that strive to reduce the achievement gap and increase retention and graduation rates of CPP students.
  • Leads and supports the SELS program coordinators to analyze program and operational needs and deliver recommendations to the Director.
  • Advise student clubs/organizations as needed. Serve as a liaison to student organizations and assist them with program development, planning, and implementation as needed.
  • Works closely with the Director to utilize student engagement, student information, and student success platforms, systems, and technology to advance the programs, initiatives, and events. Responsible for knowing how to utilize the various platforms to provide training and marketing of the technology to the campus community, including students, faculty, and staff. Work with Information Technology (IT) in ensuring the maintenance, troubleshooting, data analytics, and performance supports the needs of the department.
  • Serve as co-chair for essential campus committees, working groups, programs, and initiatives, including but not limited to CPP Fest and Welcome Week activities. Serve as a member of the Fall Student Convocation planning committee.
  • Responsible for updating and revising existing leadership development programs and initiatives, including the creation of logic models, program objectives, curricula development, and assessment plans. This includes the program coordination, facilitation of sessions, training coordinators, student workers, campus partners, faculty, and staff.
  • Responsible for supporting other areas within SELS in integrating equity-focused, inclusive, strengths-based leadership development elements into their programming.

Training and Program Assessment
  • Align leadership program with the Leadership Programs CAS (Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education) standards and Digital Badging Credential process.
  • Facilitate outreach and leadership workshops as requested by the campus community.
  • Network with campus departments to conduct programs to outreach and inform the campus community on trends, best practices, and issues related to student engagement.
  • Review and analyze student engagement data utilization each term.
  • Work with the program coordinators to develop and implement an annual/bi-annual training program for undergraduate student assistants.
  • Develop annual goals, assessment plans, and reports for Leadership Development.
  • Conduct regular and ongoing assessments of programs and services to ensure that the work is aligned with the University and divisional strategic plans and meets the needs of the campus community.

Engagement and Marketing
  • Coordinate the management of the SELS website and social media channels.
  • Establish working relationships with departments focused on retention and student success. Identify opportunities to collaborate on workshops or events to enhance the student experience.
  • Serve as a liaison to classes, departments, student organizations, and affinity groups that align with the area of Leadership Development.
  • Responsible for the development and production of the marketing materials for Leadership Development and branding. Including but not limited to brochures, websites, and social media to promote the mission and purpose of the Leadership Development programs and services.

Fiscal Responsibilities
  • Work closely with Coordinators to review budget projections and expenses, including State, ASI, Foundation, and grant funds. Advise Coordinators on best practices regarding budget processes and creating budgets aligned with program and event costs.
  • Work collaboratively with the budget analyst for fiscal monitoring and processes.
  • Responsible for reconciling monthly procurement card statements.
  • Support fundraising opportunities for SELS in collaboration with University Advancement.

Other Duties
  • Research anti-racist and culturally relevant leadership programs and best practices that align with the University and Divisional Strategic Plan and priority areas.
  • Identify best practices that align with leadership development, career readiness, and entrepreneurial pathways.
  • Provide support on external reviews and strategic planning initiatives.

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment to this classification.
  • Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
  • Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas; plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations; analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served; and establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.
  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Education, Sociology, Higher Education or a related field may be substituted forone year of experience.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student affairs work experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing justice, diversity, equity, and inclusivity in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with diverse groups of students and professionals in a student-engagement and student-centered environment
