Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM; this is a temporary position to end on or before June 30, 2019 with a possibility of renewal on an annual basis if program needs exist.

About the Position:
The Environmental Health and Safety office provides specialized services in the area of environment management in order to protect the environment and comply with federal, state and local regulations. Programs include air quality management, hazardous waste management, and soil and water pollution prevention. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist (Administrative Analyst/Specialist-Exempt I). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

This position, under general supervision of the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Associate Director encompasses the University's compliance programs in: health and safety, occupational safety, hazardous materials/waste, biological, radiation, medical waste, storm water, and air quality. Incumbent assists the department in the areas of health and safety, environmental compliance and occupational safety including, but not limited to, permits, storm water pollution prevention, air quality, compliance reports, accident/incident investigations, fall protection, ladder safety, confined space, lockout/tagout, job hazard analysis, standard operating procedures, and machinery safety. Provides technical support with asbestos, lead, and mold projects and takes samples for lab analysis, as needed. Provides on an as-needed basis general support for several required safety training topics including but not limited to fire and life safety, hazard communication, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, heat illness, noise exposure, back safety, asbestos, fall protection and ladder safety. Performs periodic inspections and audits of departments to ensure compliance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Program. This position also provides support in all campus areas that use, handle, or dispose of hazardous materials including radiation, chemicals, electronic and universal wastes, and bio-hazardous materials. Inspects laboratories and other campus locations for the accumulation of hazardous waste and ensures timely service. Identifies the waste by hazard class and ensures appropriate labeling, segregation and storage of the material. Works closely with departments, technicians, and other campus personnel to collect hazardous waste materials from laboratories and other campus locations and transports to the hazardous waste storage facility. Assists with the implementation of the hazard communication program and ensures chemical users have access to Safety Data Sheets. Maintains Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training and performs emergency response functions as necessary. Responds to emergency hazardous chemical spills on campus and in laboratories to contain and clean-up the spilled chemicals and arrange for them to be transported to the Chemical Storage Area for proper characterization and disposal. May be asked to serve on campus-wide safety committees such as, but not limited to, physical plant safety committee, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics safety committee, biosafety committee, engineering and computer science safety committee, and visual arts safety committee. Performs other duties as assigned.




Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university and/or the equivalent training and administrative work experience involving the study, analysis, evaluation, development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices or programs plus two years of related experience.

Working knowledge of and the ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations. Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program or administrative specialty. Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques. Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. Skilled in research, development, and evaluation of policies and programs. Ability to collect, evaluate, and interpret data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Expertise investigating and analyzing problems with broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively. Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form. Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Special Working Conditions:
Work in laboratories, the University's Hazardous Waste Facility, and other campus work locations where a large variety of hazardous, extremely hazardous, radioactive, and bio-hazardous materials are present. Close contact with these materials is a daily occurrence using appropriate personal protective equipment. Occasionally may be required to work outside normal business hours. May require attendance at training out of the area and away from the campus for several days. May be called to work during evenings and on weekends to hazmat spill or other related incident.
