Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director of Residential Life for Community Standards and Care is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the department's efforts focused on providing residents and staff members an environment rooted in belonging, inclusion, and community development. The Assistant Director of Residential Life will be charged with the oversight of our residential areas spanning across five communities which may encompass traditional residence halls, suite-style living, and/or apartments. This position is responsible for providing administrative and management support to the Associate Director of Residential Life and to support the Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) mission, vision, and values. The primary areas of responsibility are leadership and staff supervision, case management and the housing department's response to students experiencing varying degrees of distress. This will be accomplished through advising the Residential Life Coordinators through their area's conduct and care cases, working directly with students referred for care or reported for allegations of misconduct, and collaboration with campus partners in support of our students.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Directly supervise, train, develop, and evaluate full-time live-in professional staff members that support on campus residential communities.
  • Train professional and student staff (Resident Advisors and Student Assistants) on crisis response and community standards training including prevention strategies, and the philosophy, policies and practices of the system so staff are prepared to effectively respond to issues.
  • Serve on the Residential Life team leadership and attend all Residential Life and department meetings deemed appropriate.
  • Oversight of all Residential Life team members who report, meet, investigate, and adjudicate allegations of resident misconduct, duty policies and protocols, and reporting expectations.
  • Monitor all reports that come in and assign cases to Residential Life staff as needed.
  • Provide oversight to the supervision of up to 100 student staff positions such as, but not limited to, Resident Advisors (RAs), and Student Assistants (SAs) spanning across 14 on-campus housing buildings as well as an apartment complex providing over 400+ apartments in East Campus.
  • Serve in the Administrator On Call emergency crisis response rotation for SHRL. Assist with emergency, crisis preparedness and response efforts.
  • Approve and evaluate all financial expenditures in assigned areas for program budgets and oversight of area program budget process totaling approximately $35,000. Approve and review all professional development fund submittals from direct reports based on department allocation for each fiscal year
  • Assist with the ongoing growth and development of multifaceted program development which may include, but is not limited to, Living Learning Communities (LLC), Academic Initiatives, transfer experience, athletics, international programs, graduate and family housing.

Residential Student Care:
  • Serve as department lead and case manager to address the needs of students who are having trouble in areas that may include academics, psychological, economic, discipline, family relationships, and/or social adjustment.
  • Respond to students in crisis who have been referred for mental health concerns including suicidal ideation or actions and self-harming behaviors. Coordinate contacts for distressed students with Residential Life staff and campus partners as appropriate.
  • Meet with professional and student staff regularly to maintain consistency in responding to inappropriate and concerning behavior.
  • Manage individualized intake of temporary housing applications and work with Coordinator of Occupancy Management, Coordinator of Housing Operations, and other SHRL personnel to support effective entry and exit.
  • Represent the SHRL department as an active member of the Care Team and other student behavior committees on campus. Work collaboratively with the campus Care Manager and Director of Student Conduct to support holistic care efforts for students in need.
  • Represent SHRL with CSUMB and off-campus stakeholders related to distressed student support and housing insecurity efforts.
  • Facilitate and assist in the resolution of escalating and/or high-level staff and student concerns and emergencies which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.

Community Standards:
  • Serve as department lead responsible for the administration of the student community standards process for residents within the student housing community (i.e. manuals, training, ongoing review, etc.).
  • In partnership with appropriate personnel, develop and lead efforts within the Residential Life team regarding care and community standards policies and procedures, support for referred and impacted students, and coordinated care of resources for students.
  • Develop, implement and review annually educational sanctions to promote restorative justice and community development.
  • In the absence of the Associate Director of Residential Life, serve as hearing officer for incidents involving a potential license termination outcome.
  • Communicate trends seen with Residential Life staff and support preventative and programming efforts to address student behavior and needs.
  • Coordinate the Student Conduct database (Maxient) and Clery reporting for Housing and Residential Life conduct cases.

Campus Partnerships:
  • Serve as additional liaison for students and identified SHRL campus partnership populations, including, but not limited to: international students, student athletes, students with disabilities, at-risk students, former foster youth and other identified populations.
  • Work collaboratively with the campus Care Manager and Director of Student Conduct to support holistic care efforts for students in need.
  • Serve as department liaison, when appropriate, to University Offices including, but not limited to, University Police, Title IX/DHR, Ombuds, Clery Director, Health and Wellness Services, and the Dean of Students Office.
  • Assist in completing tracking and calculation of reports of Clery numbers with the Clery Compliance Officer.
  • Lead, promote, and encourage department efforts toward participating in campus wide Basic Needs Initiatives, including programming and outreach.
  • Serve as liaison for campus partners when working through residential projects, concerns, or agreements and when specific individual concerns arise.
  • Work in partnership with Assignments and Customer Service Specialists and Associate Director for Operations and Finance regarding the assignments and early arrival support for campus partner populations.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and chair of various department committees, as assigned.
  • Identify issues or concerns within Residential Life, take initiative to resolve or report them and assist in the identification of potential solutions.
  • Keep a strategic focus on partnership building across campus to best support students and SHRL.
  • Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Provide routine data, quantitative and qualitative reports on residential behavioral, distressed concerns and other information as needed.
  • Serves as a designated SHRL administrator for the conduct database including report updates and setting up administrative processes (Maxient).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Successful candidates will possess a working knowledge of practice, procedure, management, and activities of SHRL Program. This candidate will have substantial understanding of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, multicultural issues. This candidate must have the ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to initiate and use resourcefulness in planning work assignments; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters and complex matters; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, and others in committee work. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Use knowledge of due process, CSU and University- wide regulations, housing policies, landlord-tenant law, and contract law.

Must have the ability to sensibly manage emergencies and respond diplomatically and effectively to complaints. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations; analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. Ability and skill to supervise the work of multiple direct reports and effectively recommend personnel actions; strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; train and evaluate the productivity and performance of employees; and analyze situations and take corrective action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.

Working knowledge of the practice, procedures, management and activities of a housing and residential life program.


Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university
At least two years of experience managing and coordinating residential programs.

Additional experience beyond the minimum requirement which demonstrates that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for up to two years of the education on a year-for-year basis.

The annual salary range for this position is $68,000-$77,000. Classification: Grade 6 Management. This is an exemptt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
