The Arabic Studies Department at Williams College is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor of Arabic Studies for a two-year appointment (2026-2028), beginning in fall 2026 and ending in May 2028. Specialization is open, with Ph.D. required by the beginning of the appointment. Excellent training and experience teaching all levels of Arabic language to non-native speakers and an active research agenda are essential. We are particularly interested in candidates who have a record of success in teaching Arabic 101/102 and whose record points to promising contributions to scholarship. The selected candidate will teach two courses per semester, including one each semester in their field of specialty. It is also expected that the selected candidate will participate meaningfully in the Winter Study curriculum which is during January.
We are especially interested in candidates who are enthusiastic about contributing to the rich and diverse intellectual life of a campus made up of colleagues and students from widely varying backgrounds. Review of applications will begin on July 15, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, student evaluations, and three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses the candidate's experience and success as a teacher. In the letter of application, we ask that candidates provide a detailed account of their experience teaching Arabic and speak to their ability to work effectively with a student population that is broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. We also invite candidates to speak to their effective use of immersion in the classroom. In late July candidates short-listed for the position will be asked to submit a video of themselves teaching an Arabic class.
