Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY

The Cloud Engineer reports to the Executive Director, Information Technology Services Support at the District Office. The work schedule is 12 months per year; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

This position is represented by CSEA (California School Employees Association), Chapter 363.

POSITION PURPOSE

Reporting to Executive Director, ITSS or an assigned administrator, the Cloud Engineer is responsible for leading cloud migration initiatives and maintaining the Districts cloud infrastructure. The Cloud Engineer performs advanced senior technical duties as a professional staff member for the planning, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing management of the Districts Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure platforms. This role focuses on ensuring the availability, performance, and security of cloud services while aligning cloud technologies with the Districts technical and business objectives. This position participates in various activities related to cloud platform information systems and provides cross-functional support and backup as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This position is a senior level, non-managerial professional, fully functional in all aspects of the assigned field. Incumbents at this level serve as a senior technical resource providing advanced technical support, cloud systems analysis and recommend solutions to assigned functional area. The position involves collaboration with leadership, technical teams, and functional areas to design cloud solutions, optimize resources, and address service gaps through continuous improvement and innovation.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Collaborate with leadership to define and lead the migration of on-premises datacenters to Microsoft Azure or AWS cloud environments.

2. Develop solutions integrating AWS or Microsoft Azure clouds with services hosted on-premises or in other cloud environments.

3. Work alongside key vendors (Microsoft, VMware, etc.) to drive the development and deployment of the technologies within the cloud environments.

4. Design and implement cloud-based solutions to meet technical and business requirements.

5. Review and optimize cloud infrastructure ensuring high availability, performance and monitor costs to prevent over provisioning.

6. Recommend and implement AWS or Azure operational best practices, which includes best practices for Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, One Drive for Business, Teams, and other associated applications, etc.

7. Monitor and troubleshoot cloud infrastructure and application performance, identifying and resolving issues in a timely manner.

8. Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools to streamline deployment, management, and monitoring of cloud resources.

9. Resolve service requests and manage assigned ticket queue.

10. Collaborate with other IT staff to address cloud vulnerabilities and threats by identifying, analyzing, and resolving infrastructure vulnerabilities and application deployment issues in a timely manner.

11. Provide support and guidance to other IT team members on cloud-related issues. Train customers on use of district cloud products and applications.

12. Continuously assess cloud technology services and processes, identifying opportunities for enhancements or replacements.

13. Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation for cloud infrastructure including Microsoft Office 365 administration.

14. Develop and maintain frameworks to guide innovation and improvement cycles, with a focus on proactive solutions and process improvements that will enhance customer experience.

15. Stay up to date with the latest Azure/AWS services, technologies, and best practices, and share knowledge with the team.

16. Perform other duties reasonably related to the job classification.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARD

Knowledge of:


1. Physical and VMWare virtualized server environments, and AWS/Microsoft Azure cloud platform.

2. Microsoft Office 365 and Windows Server environments, including Active Directory and Azure Active Directory.

3. Cloud security principles, techniques and protocols.

4. Multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environments.

5. Enterprise level cloud backup procedures software and procedures.

6. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and cloud hosted websites and applications.

7. Principles of training, support, and services to end-users.

8. Modern office administrative practices and use of tools including computers, websites and other applications related to this job.

Skills and Ability to:

1. Perform advanced systems and database administration.

2. Educate end users as needed to facilitate troubleshooting and use of technology to perform their work.

3. Analyze and develop logical solutions to problems.

4. Install, maintain and administer operating systems and application servers.

5. Prepare clear and concise system documentation and reports.

6. Prioritize assigned tasks and projects.

7. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.

8. Communicate complicated technical issues and the risks they pose to stakeholders and management.

9. Work with attention to detail and independently with minimum supervision.


Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Bachelors degree from an accredited institution with major course work in computer information systems, computer science, engineering, technology, or related field.

2. Four years of work experience in the Information Technology field.

3. Two years of experience supporting and managing Microsoft 365 and/or Azure/AWS infrastructure.

4. Proficient knowledge and understanding of cloud computing and hands-on experience migrating workloads to Azure or AWS.

5. Cloud based certifications such as AWS Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Certified Azure Fundamentals, etc.


Desired Qualifications:
1. Experience in managing a Microsoft Azure or AWS with 3000+ users.

2. Experience working within large, complex higher education environments, supporting both academic and administrative functions.

    Salary Range:
    $141,330 - $172,437 Annual Salary (Range 150: Classified Salary Schedule Fiscal Year 2025-2026). Starting placement is generally at Step 1.

    Benefits:
    In addition to the salary, this position qualifies for the choice of one of the Districts excellent Health Benefits and Welfare plans, which the premium cost is 100% paid by the District for the employee and their eligible dependents, and one health plan costing an estimated $60,000 for the District for fiscal year 2025-2026. We offer two medical plans (Anthem Blue Cross [PPO] and Kaiser Permanente (HMO]); dental (Delta Dental PPO); vision (VSP Choice); life insurance for the employee (The Lincoln); life insurance for eligible dependents (The Lincoln); a long term disability/income protection plan (The Lincoln); and an employee assistance plan (Anthem EAP).

    In addition, the District contributes an additional 26.81% of the employees salary towards an eligible employees pension (CalPERS).

    Employees may also elect to participate in optional plans including purchasing additional life insurance for themselves and their eligible dependent(s); enroll in a medical, transportation, and/or dependent care Flexible Spending Account(s) (with the $4 monthly administrative fee paid by the District); and set pre-taxed dollars aside to supplement their pension in a 403b (tax shelter annuity) and/or a 457 (deferred compensation) plan(s).

    Classified employees also earn 10 to 22 days per year of vacation (based on years of service), and up to 12 sick leave days (pro-rated for less than full-time positions). There are currently 20 paid holidays.
