The Department of Computer Science and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics position with appointment to begin the academic year 2026-2027.
The University of Rhode Island enrolls approximately 17,000 students across its graduate and undergraduate programs. It is the State's flagship, public R1 research university as well as the land grant and sea grant university for the state of Rhode Island. The main campus is located in the historic village of Kingston and the Bay campus is located near Narragansett Bay. Both campuses are near major beaches in a beautiful coastal community. URI is just 30 minutes from Providence, RI and within easy reach of Newport, Boston, and New York City.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The selected candidate for this position will be expected to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, develop new statistics classes at the undergraduate and graduate level, keep an active research program, seek external funding, advise and supervise graduate students in statistics or related fields (through joint supervisions), participate in service activities and provide consulting services to students and other faculty in the Department, College and University.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
1. Ph.D. in statistics, biostatistics, or a very closely related discipline (degree must be earned before 31 August 2026).
2. Ability to conduct academic research and publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
3. Ability and interest in teaching graduate and/or undergraduate courses in statistics.
4. Ability to develop and maintain a collaborative and internally/externally funded research program in statistics and/or related fields.
5. Strong interpersonal communication skills.
6. Excellent command of written and spoken English.
7. Ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
PREFERRED:
1. While all areas of methodological and applied research in statistics will be fully considered, candidates with research interests in areas such as Bayesian methods, survival analysis, experimental design, functional data analysis, clinical trials, precision medicine, and meta-analysis are especially encouraged to apply.
2. Ability to develop curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
3. Ability and/or experience advising and/or mentoring students.
4. Interest in developing collaborative research and/or consulting to support the interdisciplinary nature of programs within the Department and the University as a whole.
5. Commitment and/or interest in participating in service and outreach committees.
6. Ability to improve recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students.
