Job Summary

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is located on the campus of the University of Utah and offers visitors the opportunity to explore over 5,000 years of human creativity with a collection of over 22,000 objects and art works from classic Greek and Roman antiquities to cutting-edge, contemporary art. Founded in 1914, the UMFA is the state of Utah's art museum, creating exhibitions and programs that serve a wide array of audiences. The UMFA is housed in the award-winning Marcia and John Price Museum Building.

The UMFA's Museum Store is an essential part of visitors' experience of the Museum. With more than 80,000 visitors to the Museum annually, the Store generates revenue that supports the Museum's work and mission. With sales totaling over $220,000 annually, the Manager is responsible for the overall business operations of the Store, including: purchasing and display of merchandise, overseeing staffing, training, relationships with consignment artists and vendors, fiscal management, inventory and control, and the production and analysis of financial reports.



Responsibilities
Ensures that the Museum Store is operated according to the mission of the UMFA and follows all Museum/University policies and procedures. Develops and maintains written operation procedures for the training of employees; including how to operate point of sale systems, how to display merchandise, cash handling requirements, customer service expectations, etc. Oversees all aspects of inventory control for the Museum Store and assists the Manager of Accounting in completing daily, monthly, and yearly audits. Conducts regular inventories of stock on hand by researching product history, purchase dates, vendors, etc. to update the inventory control record. Helps prepare department for storewide inventory audits by ensuring proper quantities are entered on the system to match stock in the store. Ensures shipments are correct by checking quantities and conditions of merchandise. Identifies and oversees purchasing of Store merchandise including: ordering, inventory documentation and control, pricing, and payment of all merchandise. Assures that all merchandise codes are current and clearly displayed. Meets with vendors to reorder merchandise and to discuss problems with merchandise that is damaged or expired, late delivery dates, customer dissatisfaction with merchandise, or service, etc. to effectively meet future customer needs, and/or improve customer service. Assures that the store has a cohesive look, is beautifully displayed, stocked, and back inventory is at a suitable level. Promotes the Museum in the local community. Develops and maintains relationships with local artists, vendors, and key community players. Cooperates with the Museum staff by attending necessary meetings and preparing for upcoming events and exhibitions to align merchandise in some cases to the Museum's collection and special exhibitions. Provides financial oversight to the store. Responsible for meeting revenue and income goals. Organizes the annual Holiday Market by meeting and coordinating with artists and with museum staff.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Supervisor, Customer Service Management: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.

Preferences
Five years of retail sales experience; a minimum of one year of experience supervising employees and buying merchandise. Effective oral and written communication skills required. Ability to problem solve and work independently and as a team. Has a commitment to provide consistent approachability with their staff, colleagues, museum visitors and members, community connections, and vendors.
