Biobanking Partnerships Director

Biobanking Partnerships Director - 37699 University Staff Description

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Department: VCHA, Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine (CCPM)

Job Title:

Position #:- Requisition #: 37699

Job Summary:

The Biobanking Partnerships Director at the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine (CCPM) provides strategic leadership for the region's premier biobank and its collaborative initiatives. In addition to overseeing the growth and impact of CCPM's biobanking capabilities, the Director is charged with leveraging CCPM's biobank as the standard to inform and elevate biobanking practice across the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. By aligning biobanking operations with best-in-class standards, the Director will help position the university as a leader in large-scale biospecimen-based research and innovation, enabling the development of high-impact partnerships with academic, clinical, and industry collaborators.

Under the oversight of the CCPM Director, this role will work closely with CU Innovations, UCHealth, and university stakeholders to ensure that broad-scale biobanking infrastructure and practices are optimized for translational research, industry partnerships, and sustainable growth.

CCPM's biobanking work includes genotyping and the clinical return of results generated in CCPM's CAP/CLIA laboratory, both for the biobank study and clinical care. For such work, oversight and sign-out duties are conducted through a partnership with the Department of Pathology. Thus, the Biobanking Partnerships Director will need to strategically weigh potential impacts upon CCPM's workflows, collaborating closely with clinical teams to ensure that partnerships are strategically aligned and practical. It is critically important that this individual understands the complexities of CAP/CLIA regulations and is a strong operational leader. The cross-campus and external collaborations must be strategic and operationalized in a manner that aligns with applicable regulations. As such, this position requires ABMGG-board eligibility/certification, or equivalent.

Key Responsibilities:

CCPM Collaborations & Business Development - 50%
  • Oversee biobank laboratory operations related to partnerships in close collaboration with and being mindful of CCPM's clinical return of results program.
  • Strategically and operationally evaluate the impact of potential partnerships, including resourcing requirements and any potential impacts to research or clinical processes. Proactively surface and work to mitigate any such impacts.
  • Participate in strategic planning for CCPM, including long-term visioning, infrastructure development, and operational leadership, leading the development and subsequent execution of strategic plans related to biobanking and partnerships.
  • Play an essential role in the successful development and execution of biobanking partnerships, developing a strong reputation for on-time and target performance.
  • Lead and participate in cross-campus, cross-institutional, and transparent governance frameworks in the evaluation of partnership opportunities and management of biobank samples and associated data.
  • Provide oversight and sign-off for assigned strategic initiatives, serving as the legally responsible party for CLIA-regulated clinical operations and ensuring ongoing CAP compliance and accreditation.

Strategic Planning & Leadership - 40%
  • Collaborative development and execution of strategic partnerships with external organizations to broaden the impact of CCPM's biobanking and foster innovations across campus.
  • Strategically and operationally vet potential biobanking-related partnerships in concert with CU Innovations team members. Key areas of focus include supporting innovation activities such as drug discovery and development.
  • Lead initiatives for continuous improvement and innovation in biobanking practices, including the adoption of emerging technologies and partnership strategies.
  • Financial oversight on proposals for industry partners.
  • Assess existing infrastructure at the university and identify areas of opportunity for future capital commitment and ongoing infrastructure improvement (i.e., architect the future of multimodal data development at the CU Anschutz campus).
  • Strategic staffing and human resources for each biobank initiative or partnership.

Other Duties as Assigned - 10%
  • This description is a summary only and describes the general level of work being performed; it is not intended to be all-inclusive. The duties of this position may change from time to time and/or based on business need.
