Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a skilled Grounds Mechanic to play a vital role in maintaining and supporting the equipment that keeps our campus beautiful and functional. In this position, you will work under the direction of the Grounds Director to repair, maintain, and fabricate a wide range of motorized and non-motorized equipment, ensuring safety and reliability for daily operations. You will also oversee the grounds shop, supervise shop personnel, and train staff on proper equipment use. This role offers the opportunity to contribute your technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and leadership to a collaborative environment where your work directly supports the success and sustainability of the university.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Manages, maintains, repairs, or fabricates all grounds equipment, including all motorized and non-motorized licensed and unlicensed equipment used for the Grounds department. Troubleshoots and diagnoses electrical and mechanical failures and work with the Equipment Manager for proper repair.
  • Maintains a preventative maintenance program cycling through all Grounds machinery.
  • Keeps accurate and detailed maintenance records and help Equipment Manager control inventory of all parts and supplies.
  • Trains grounds personnel on how to start, operate and safely use all grounds equipment.
  • Tests for safety and proper functioning equipment and performs other job duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and three years of job related experience.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge in repairing small and large engines and equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic repair.
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance and landscaping.
Skills
  • Computer skills and knowledge.
  • Possess interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Abilities
  • Ability to learn new inventory software.
  • Ability to supervise and train staff.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and files.
  • Ability to perform auto body repair and painting.
  • Ability to operate heavy and light equipment.
  • Ability to work an on-call 24/7 schedule for snow removal and other campus emergencies.
  • Ability to read and understand the electrical schematics of equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate welders (wire, arc and gas).
  • Ability to monitor a budget and report verbally and in writing the mechanical needs of the department. This includes the ability to analyze and compare the cost effectiveness of repair vs. replacement of physical plant equipment and be able to verbally and in writing make recommendations to appropriate physical plant personnel.
