Position Description
Reporting to the Music Program Director and part of the Seattle University Department of Performing Arts & Arts Leadership, this position provides essential musical and artistic support to the Music Program and the BA Interdisciplinary Arts in Music degree.
About the Program:
Seattle University Music is part of the Performing Arts and Arts Leadership Department in the College of Arts and Sciences, which includes Music, Theater, and Arts Leadership. SU Music serves a broad cross-section of students and community members from all disciplines and supports the BA Interdisciplinary Arts in Music degree program with specializations in both vocal and instrumental music. The program encompasses three choral ensembles and a wide range of music courses, including music theory, ear training, music history, group piano, world music, chamber music, sound & audio production, and more. Private lessons are offered in voice, guitar, piano, and strings. With a vibrant calendar of performances, guest artists, and collaborations each year, we are a community of active scholar-artist-teachers committed to providing transformational artistic and educational experiences to the Seattle University community.
Responsibilities / Duties:
Play piano for music classes as assigned quarterly, including:
Rehearsals of choral ensembles (MUSC 1300, MUSC 1310, MUSC 1340)
Intro to Conducting (MUSC 2910)
Vocal Technique and Performance (MUSC 1450)
Lead choral sectionals and warmups on request.
Accompany public-facing performances, including:
Choral concerts
Annual Senior Showcase Recital
Masterclasses
Student recitals
Student lessons upon request
Play for annual campus-wide liturgies: Mass of the Holy Spirit, Baccalaureate Mass.
Musical collaboration within Performing Arts & Arts Leadership and other departments as time allows.
Create practice tracks as needed for students' independent study.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Work is performed in a classroom or office setting. Minimal local travel to concert sites.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Master's degree in piano or equivalent professional experience.
Availability to play piano for rehearsals and performances of individual students and ensembles; schedule to be arranged quarterly in coordination with the Music Program Director.
Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision - self-directed and self-starting.
Comfort working with a wide range of student experience levels, from beginner to advanced.
Advanced ability in piano playing and a facility for accompanying other musicians and ensembles.
Strong music sight-reading skills.
Ability to follow quick transitions within rehearsals.
High level of preparation.
Demonstrates musicianship, including steady rhythm, strong aural skills, and keyboard technique.
Advanced rehearsal support, including working with a conductor without delay, giving pitches ahead of cues, and anticipating sections needing support without instruction.
Prepared to play at performance tempo at the first rehearsal.
Ability to play reduced accompaniment and open score parts interchangeably.
Demonstrated ability to lead small and large group choral sectionals and rehearsals as needed.
Interpersonal composure and flexibility in working with a diverse range of people and schedules.
Preference for candidates with a background in choral music and/or knowledge of vocal technique.
Ability to easily transpose, harmonize, and improvise is a bonus.
Organ playing experience is a bonus.

Compensation at a Glance
Salary Range: $31.25 per hour
