The Integrated Teaching and Learning Program (ITLP) within the College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU Boulder is seeking a full-time, temporary Instructional Prototyping & Fabrication Engineer to support hands-on undergraduate engineering instruction for students, staff, and faculty across all levels and engineering fields. This position provides expert guidance in CAD software (SolidWorks, Onshape), laser cutters, 3D scanners, and other prototyping tools used in hands-on engineering. The role also leads and mentors student staff, leads workshop instruction, and manages high-use equipment and lab resources. Additionally, the Instructional Prototyping & Fabrication Engineer contributes to the development and documentation of hands-on curriculum, supports process improvements, and helps foster an inclusive and collaborative learning environment.

Who We Are
The Integrated Teaching and Learning Program hosts or collaborates with other College of Engineering and Applied Science departments on many K-12 engineering education initiatives, offering a wide range of hands-on engineering opportunities for K-12 teachers and students, faculty and the general public. The award-winning ITL Program is committed to creating a more diverse student population at CU Boulder and broadening the exposure of K-12 students-particularly students of color, young women, low-income and first-generation college-bound students-to engineering.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Student Instruction & Technical Consultation:
- Delivers engaging, hands-on workshops for engineering students on topics including CAD (SolidWorks and Onshape), laser cutting and engraving, 3D scanning, and other prototyping tools that support hands-on engineering courses.
- Trains and mentors ITLP student and professional staff to teach workshops offered during evening and weekend hours.
- Provides on-demand technical guidance to students and faculty in the design, build, test, and documentation of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
- Adapts instructional techniques to create an inclusive, encouraging learning environment for all students.
Prototyping Equipment and Lab Systems Management:
- Leads multiple prototyping ecosystems. These ecosystems include training students to use various equipment (e.g., laser cutters, 3D scanners, sewing machines, etc.), the development and iteration of hands-on workshop content, equipment maintenance, repair, and life-cycle management.
- Manages and updates CAD documentation for ITLP infrastructure, including space planning, renovations, and equipment layouts.
- Supports a clean, safe, and inclusive environment by maintaining lab organization, safety protocols, and accessible instructional materials.
- Independently evaluates and recommends upgrades to ITLL prototyping and fabrication equipment based on industry trends, student needs, and faculty-driven course applications. This includes securing funding through grant-writing, when applicable.
Engineering Education Curriculum Development
- Supports the development of hands-on learning activities focused on prototyping and fabrication, partnering with the ITLP engineering managers and faculty to enhance engineering coursework.
- Evaluates ITLP curriculum for effectiveness in demonstrating fundamental engineering concepts to students in intriguing and informative ways.
- Develops assessment strategies and implements data-driven improvements based on faculty and student feedback to continually enhance hands-on learning experiences.
What We Can Offer
The pay range for this position is $25.00-$35.00 per hour.

What We Require
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM or related field.
- A combination of education and relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
What You Will Need
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on student instruction and support.
- Experience teaching, or mentoring in a technical or classroom settings.
- Confidence in public speaking and instruction of groups of up to 40 students.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
- Comfort resolving equipment issues and guiding users through technical tasks.
- A flexible and approachable attitude when working with students of varying experience levels.
- Commitment to maintaining a welcoming, inclusive, and safe learning environment.
